If HOPE of our hearts, O Lord, appear! 4 mf What to the joy, the deeper joy,

Thou glorious Star of day,
Shine forth, and chase the dreary night,
With all our tears, away!

2 mf No resting-place we seek on earth,
No loveliness we see ;
Our eye is on the royal crown
Prepared for us and Thee.

3mf But, blessed Lord, however bright
That crown of joy above,
What is it to the brighter hope
Of dwelling in Thy love?

Unmingled, pure, and free,
Of union with our living Head,
Of fellowship with Thee?

5mfThis joy e'en now on earth is ours; But only, Lord, above,

Our hearts, without a pang, shall know
The fulness of Thy love.

6 ƒ There, near Thy heart, upon the throne,
Thy ransomed Bride shail see
What grace was in the bleeding Lamb
Who died to make her free. Amen

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee."
ImfPEACE, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin?
The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.

2 mf Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed?
To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.

3mf Peace, perfect peace, with sorrows surging round?
On Jesus' bosom nought but calm is found.

4mf Peace, perfect peace, with loved ones far away?
cres In Jesus' keeping we are safe, and they.

5mf Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?
cres Jesus we know, and He is on the throne.

6

Peace, perfect peace, death shadowing us and ours?
f Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers.

7 It is enough: earth's struggle soon shall cease
cres And Jesus call us to heaven's perfect peace. Amen.

286 "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."

ImfSAFE in the arms of Jesus, Safe on His gentle breast, There, by His love o'ershaded,

Sweetly my soul shall rest. Hark! 'tis the voice of angels,

Borne in a song to me, cres Over the fields of glory, Over the crystal sea.

2 mf Safe in the arms of Jesus,

Safe from corroding care.
Safe from the world's temptations,
Sin cannot harm me there-

Free from the blight of sorrow,

Free from my doubts and fears; Only a few more trials,

Only a few more tears.

3 mf Jesus, my heart's dear refuge, Jesus has died for me; cres Firm on the Rock of Ages Ever my trust shall be. Here let me wait with patience, Wait till the night is o'er, cres Wait till I see the morning

Break on the golden shore. Amen.

"Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness."

mf SOMETIMES a light surprises The Christian while he sings;

cres It is the Lord who rises

With healing in His wings.
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
cres A season of clear shining
To cheer it after rain.

mf In holy contemplation,

We sweetly then pursue The theme of God's salvation, And find it ever new.

cres Set free from present sorrow, We cheerfully can say

"Even let the unknown to-morrow Bring with it what it

may,

3mf "It can bring with it nothing

But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing
Will clothe His people too.
Beneath the spreading heavens,
No creature but is fed;
And He who feeds the ravens
Will give His children bread."

4 Though vine nor fig-tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there,

cres Yet, God the same abiding,

His praise shall tune my voice; f For, while in Him confiding, I cannot but rejoice. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

I mf YOUR harps, ye trembling saints, cres Then is the time to trust our God,

Down from the willows take;

Loud to the praise of love divine
Bid every string awake.

2 mf Though in a foreign land,

We are not far from home;
And nearer to our house above
We every moment come.

3 mf His grace will to the end

Stronger and brighter shine;
Nor present things, nor things to come
Shall quench the spark divine.

4 When we in darkness walk,
Nor feel the heavenly flame,

And rest upon His name.

5 mf Soon shall our doubts and fears

Subside at His control;

His loving-kindness shall break dim The midnight of the soul. [through 6 cres Wait till the shadows flee,

Wait thy appointed hour,

Wait till the Bridegroom of thy soul f Reveals His love with power. 7 mf Blest is the man, O God,

That stays himself on Thee! Who wait for Thy salvation, Lord, Shall Thy salvation see. Amen.
