With the cross of Je-sus, 375 Be strong and of a good courage And the Lord, He it is that doth go

before thee." f ONWARD, Christian soldiers,

We are not divided ;
Marching as to war,

All one body we-
With the cross of Jesus

cres One in hope, in doctrine,
Going on before !

One in charity.
Christ, the Royal Master,
Leads against the foe;

4 © Crowns and thrones may perish, Forward into battle,

Kingdoms rise and wane,
See, His banners go!

cres But the Church of Jesus ff Onward, Christian soldiers, &c. Constant will remain ; f At the sign of triumph

f Gates of hell can never

'Gainst that Church prevail ; Satan's host doth flee :

We have Christ's own promise,
On, then, Christian soldiers,

And that cannot fail.
On to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver
At the shout of praise !

5 f Onward, then, ye faithful !

Join our happy throng; cres Brothers, lift your voices,

Blend with ours your voices,
Loud your anthems raise.

In the triumph-song: 3 f Like a mighty army

cres Glory, laud, and honour, Moves the Church of God;

Unto Christ the King ! mf Brothers, we are treading

mf This, through countless ages, Where the saints have trod :

Men and angels sing. Amen.

376 "Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward." I mfFORWARD!" be our watchword, 4 mf Glories upon glories Steps and voices joined ;

Hath our God prepared,
Seek the things before us,

By the souls that love Him
Not a look behind :

One day to be shared ;
Burns the fiery pillar

p Eye hath not beheld them,
At our army's head ;

Ear hath never heard ;
Who shall dream of shrinking, Nor of these hath uttered
By our Captain led ?

Thought or speech a word :
f Forward through the desert, f Forward, marching eastward
Through the toil and fight;

Where the heaven is bright,
Jordan flows before us,

Till the veil be lifted,
Sion beams with light.

Till our faith be sight.
mf Forward, when in childhood 5 mf Far o'er yon horizon
Buds the infant mind ;

Rise the city towers,
All through youth and manhood, Where our God abideth ;
Not a thought behind :

That fair home is ours :
Speed through realms of nature, Flash the streets with jasper,
Climb the steps of grace ;

Shine the gates with gold;
Faint not, till in glory

Flows the gladdening river
Gleams our Father's face.

Shedding joys untold :
f Forward, all the life-time,

f Thither, onward thither,
Climb from height to height;

In the Spirit's might;
Till the head be hoary,

Pilgrims to your country,
Till the eve be light.

Forward into light ! 3. mf Forward, flock of Jesus,

6 f To th eternal Father
Salt of all the earth ;

Loudest anthems raise ;
Till each yearning purpose

To the Son and Spirit
Spring to glorious birth :

Echo songs of praise ;
p Sick, they ask for healing,

To the Lord of Glory
Blind, they grope for day;

Blessed Three in One, cres Pour upon the nations

Be by men and angels
Wisdom's loving ray.

Endless honour done!
f Forward, out of error,

p Weak are earthly praises, Leave behind the night ;

Dull the songs of night : Forward through the darkness, cres Forward into triumph, Forward into light !

f Forward into light ! Amen
