ImfOH, for the peace which floweth as a river,
Making life's desert places bloom and smile!
Oh, for the faith to grasp heaven's bright "for-ever,'
Amid the shadows of earth's "little while!"

2 p A little while for patient vigil-keeping,
cres To face the stern, to wrestle with the strong.

A little while, to sow the seed with weeping,
cres Then bind the sheaves, and sing the harvest song.
3 A little while, to wear the weeds of sadness,

To pace with weary step through miry ways;
cres Then to pour forth the fragrant oil of gladness,
f And clasp the girdle round the robe of praise.

4mf A little while, the earthen pitcher taking

To wayside brooks, from far-off fountains fed;
Then the cool lip its thirst for ever slaking
cres Beside the fulness of the Fountain-head.

5mf A little while, to keep the oil from failing;

A little while, faith's flickering lamp to trim;
cres And then, the Bridegroom's coming footsteps hailing,
f To greet His advent with the bridal hymn.

6mf And He who is Himself the Gift and Giver-
The future glory and the present smile,

cres With the bright promise of the glad "for-ever,"
dim Will light the shadows of the "little while." Amen.

10,4,10,4,10, IO. Rev. J. B. DYKES, Mus. Doc.

"He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness."

ImfLEAD, kindly Light, (p) amid the encircling gloom,
cres Lead Thou me on;

The night is dark, and I am far from home,

cres Lead Thou me on.

mf Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see

The distant scene: (p) one step enough for me.
2 mf I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;

I loved to choose and see my path; (cres) but now
Lead Thou me on.

mf I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,

Pride ruled my will: (pp) remember not past years.

3 mf So long Thy power hath blessed me, (cres) sure it still
Will lead me on,

O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till

The night is gone;

f And with the morn those angel faces smile

dim Which I have loved long since, (p) and lost awhile.

[blocks in formation]

Amen.

Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage."

Zion's city is in sight:

1 ƒ CHILDREN of the heavenly King, 4 f Lift your eyes, ye sons of light;
As ye journey, sweetly sing;
Sing your Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in His works and ways.

2 mf We are travelling home to God
In the way the fathers trod;
They are happy now; and we
Soon their happiness shall see.
3 f Shout, ye little flock and blest!
You on Jesus' throne shall rest;
There your seat is now prepared,
There your kingdom and reward.

PILGRIMAGE.

There our endless home shall be ; There our Lord we soon shall see. 5 f Fear not, brethren; joyful stand On the borders of your land; Jesus Christ, your Father's Son, Bids you undismayed go on. 6mf Lord, obediently we go,

Gladly leaving all below:

cres Only Thou our Leader be, f And we still will follow Thee. Ame 8,7,8,7,4,7.

396 "Now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them

that slept."

TAKE comfort, Christians, when In Jesus fall asleep; [your friends Their better being never ends; Why then dejected weep? f Why inconsolable, as those

To whom no hope is given ? Death is the messenger of peace cres And calls the soul to heaven. nf As Jesus died, and rose again

Victorious from the dead, es So His disciples rise, and reign f With their triumphant Head. f The time draws nigh, when from

the clouds

Christ shall with shouts descend, f And the last trumpet's awful voice

The heavens and earth shall rend.

5mfThen they who live shall changed be And they who sleep shall wake; The graves shall yield their ancient charge,

And earth's foundations shake.

6 ƒ The saints of God, from death set free,
With joy shall mount on high;
The heavenly hosts, with praises loud,
Shall meet thun in the sky.

7 mf Together to their Father's house
With joyful hearts they go,
And dwell for ever with the Lord,
Beyond the reach of woe.

8 mf A few short years of evil past,

We reach the happy shore, Where death-divided friends at last res Shall meet to part no more. Amen.
