The Saviour calls us to His side;
Oh, come, together let us mourn :
Jesus, our Lord, is crucified !

While soldiers scoff, and Jews deride?
Ah! look how patiently He hangs:

"The chastisement of our peace was upon Him."

1pO CHRIST, what burdens bowed Thy head!

Our load was laid on Thee; Thou stoodest in the sinner's stead, Didst bear all ill for me:

A victim led, Thy blood was shed; cres Now there's no load for me.

2 p Death and the curse were in our cup;
O Christ, 'twas full for Thee!
But Thou hast drained the last dark

mf'Tis empty now for me! [dropThat bitter cup-Love drank it up; mf Now blessing's draught for me.

3 The tempest's awful voice was heard;
PO Christ, it broke on Thee!
nf Thy open bosom was my ward-
It braved the storm for me:

Thy form was scarred, Thy visage marred;

mf Now cloudless peace for me.

78 "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass.”

1 f RIDE on, ride on in majesty !

Hark! all the tribes "Hosanna" cry:
O Saviour meek, pursue Thy road,
With palms and scattered garments
strowed.

2 ef Ride on, ride on in majesty!
p In lowly pomp ride on to die!
cres O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin
O'er captive death and conquered sin.

3 f Ride on, ride on in majesty !

Look down with sad and wondering

eyes

To see the approaching sacrifice. 4 f Ride on, ride on in majesty!

The last and fiercest strife is nigh; cres The Father on His sapphire throne Expects His own anointed Son.

5f Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die!
Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain;

Then take, O God, Thy power, and reign! Amen.

79 "The soldiers, when they had platted a crown of thorns, put it on His head.

1mfO SACRED Head, once wounded,

With grief and pain weighed down,
How scornfully surrounded

With thorns, Thine only crown!
How pale art Thou with anguish,
With sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish,
Which once was bright as morn!

2mfO Lord of life and glory,

What bliss till now was Thine!
I read the wondrous story,
I joy to call Thee mine.
Thy grief and Thy compassion
Were all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But Thine the deadly pain.

3mf What language shall I borrow,

To praise Thee, heavenly Friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
Lord, make me Thine for ever,
Nor let me faithless prove;
cres Oh, let me never, never
Abuse such dying love!

4

Be near me, Lord, when dying;
Oh, show Thy cross to me!
And, for my succour flying,

Come, Lord, to set me free!

mf These eyes, new faith receiving,
From Jesus shall not move;
For he who dies believing,
rall Dies safely through Thy love.
Amen
