PREFACE.

WE close this eighteen hundred and seventy as we have closed former years, with thankfulness to the Giver of all good, and with gratitude to many friends who have rendered us valuable aid in our editorial labours. With reference to the future we have little to say, but that it will be our endeavour to render the Christian Witness worthy of the approval which is now kindly awarded to it by many competent judges. Denominational matters will have a still more prominent place in our pages than heretofore. We have received definite promises of articles on the history of Congregationalism in the following counties :-Cornwall, Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Leicester, Shropshire, and Wiltshire. We wish to open the Witness to a fair discussion of important questions now agitated denominationally, such as the Augmentation Fund and Ministerial Settle

ments.

Biblical questions will have such attention as our limits may allow. The young will be considered and cared for. British Missions will have their Quarterly Record, and the Quarterly Supplement of Foreign Christian Work will be continued. Historical and Biographical papers have been promised, and general instruction and edification will be studied.

The year now closing will long be memorable in the history of Europe, as the era of a war which in some respects has had no parallel. Writing as we do on the 22nd of November, there is a dark cloud gathering over nations which at present enjoy peace. And God only knows whether the cloud will be dispersed, or will burst in a storm which will involve our own as well as other lands in dire and deadly conflict. It is our joy to know that He reigneth, and that He is directing all events towards the consummation which His mercy has in store for mankind, when the kingdoms of this world shall become the kingdoms of His own dear Son. May we be found faithful to our trust, as stewards of His oracles and of many privileges!

STEPNEY GREEN,

JOHN KENNEDY.
