3 How strange that glowing word, that shows
Th' elect complete in God's dear Son !-
Yet gives no heat, altho' it glows,
Nor spark of faith in what he's done.
4 And, O what cheerful promises
Flow sweetly thro' the lit'ral road!—
But, tho' they're cheerful, they can't cheer;
I feel I'm fainting while I read.

5 And more than this, the seeker cries,-
The more I read, the more I've strife;
My spirit on that statute dies,

That once appear'd ordain'd to life!
6 Nor law alone, but gospel grieves!
For while I read, and don't possess,
I die, ev'n on the vital leaves,
With gloomy fears that I'm not his.
Now hear the secret, drooping soul,
And, if applied, 'twill end the strife-
Dead letters cannot make thee whole,
Or give the dying spirit life!

8 'Tis not on signs God's saints are fed;
"Tis substance they must live upon;

That sacred, mystic "flesh and blood"The Living Word !-Th' Essential Son! 9 Nor prophets' word nor prophets' pen Can move, or vital spirit give;

The Living God, who mov'd the men,
Must live in us-and then we live!

10 But so the sacred scripture tells—
(Then cease, vain struggling, cease thy
strife!)

That ev'n inspired letter kills! 'Tis the Inspirer giveth life! 11 Then, O thou vital Spirit, give The Life Divine to live upon!Or rather in the life to live, And by it live upon the Son!

SPIRIT of Faith, come down,
Reveal the things of God;

S. M.

And make Immanuel's Godhead known,
And witness with the blood.

"Tis thine the blood t' apply,
And give us eyes to see

That Jesus did for sinners die,
And that he died for me.

No man can truly say
That Jesus is the Lord,
Unless thou take the veil away,
And breathe the Living Word!

4 Then, only then, we feel
Our int'rest in his blood;

5

And cry, with joy unspeakable,
"Thou art my Lord, my God!"
Blest are the souls that know
The sin-atoning Lamb!

Spirit of Faith, descend and show
The virtue of his Name!

6 The gracious gift bestow,
The saving pow'r impart,

(Thou witness in the church below,)
And speak it to my heart.

7 Inspire that living faith,
Which whosoe'er receives,
The witness in himself he hath,
And consciously believes.

8

That faith that conquers all;

That doth the mountains move;
That lifts the ransom'd from the fall,
And settles them in love.

[blocks in formation]

1 BREATHE on thy garden, Heav'nly Wind!
And make thy blest plantation grow;
Let spicy odours cheer the mind,
Propitious breezes round it blow.

2 When thou art still, our sick'ning souls
Languish, and droop, and faint away:
In vain th' inspired gard'ner toils
With letter-promises to stay.

3 For these we thank th' Inspiring Breath,
But these, alone, will not sustain;
Our pow'rs would sink in instant death,
If left to live and rest on them.

4 Then come, Celestial Spirit, come!
And breathe thy quick'ning gales within;
And spread abroad divine perfume-
The odours of Immanuel's Name!

5 Heav'n's choicest fruits will then abound-
Gladness, and praise, and love divine:
Our ev'ry fruit from him is found,—
He is the root, the sap, the vine!

1 AT anchor laid, remote from home, Toiling, I cry, Sweet Spirit, come! Celestial breeze, no longer stay,

L. M.

But swell my sails, and speed my way! 2 Fain would I mount, fain would I glow, And loose my cable from below:

Come, Heav'nly Spirit! spread my sail; And breathe the blest auspicious gale.

1 A DEBTOR to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing;

Nor fear, with thy righteousness on,
My person and off'rings to bring:
The terrors of law and of God

With me can have nothing to do;
My Saviour's obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.

2 The work that his goodness began,
The arm of his strength will complete;
His promise is Yea and Amen,

And never was forfeited yet:
Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below, nor above,
Can make him his purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from his love.
3 My name from the palms of his hands
Eternity cannot erase!
Impress'd on his heart it remains
În marks of indelible grace:
Yes! I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is giv'n;
More happy, but not more secure,
The glorify'd spirit in heav'n!

1 BENEATH the sacred throne of God

I saw a river rise,

The streams were peace and pard'ning blood,
Descending from the skies.

2 Angelic minds cannot explore
This deep, unfathom'd sea;

"Tis void of bottom, brim, or shore,
And lost in Deity.

3 I stood amaz'd, and wonder'd when,
Or why, this ocean rose,

That wafts salvation down to men,-
His traitors and his foes.
