THIS Volume has not been compiled with the least intention of depreciating similar productions of others. I very highly esteem such productions, when spiritual, as blessings of no small magnitude to the church in the wilderness, whose solitary hours are often greatly cheered thereby. Nor has this work been undertaken for amusement; for I have ever seen, that if justice were done to my own intentions of presenting to the church of Christ, a collection of pure, powerful, and savoury Hymns, suitable for public singing, very great attention, and much labour, must be sacrificed. Neither has pecuniary profit been the objectyet the "labourer is worthy of his hire;" and I can assure the reader, that the labour in getting up this work has been such, that the profit of ten times the number now published would not induce me to go through the same again-except for righteousness sake. Nor have I made this Collection to gratify vanity as an author: nor yet as the Minister of a Congregation panting to look only upon my 66 own things" therein. Had the latter been the motive, I would at once have composed and published a volume entirely my own, which I think might have been accomplished with as little time and trouble as this Collection has cost.
