His eye, quick glancing o'er the plains, Descries his Home, tho' distant still; While he surveys the much-lov'd spot, He slights the space that lies between; His past fatigues are now forgot,

For Home endears the onward scené. 2 So when from Zion's Hill we view Our Glorious Mansion in the skies, This doth our fainting strength renew, And wings our zeal to reach the prize: That Heav'nly Home our spirits cheer, No more we grieve for troubles past, Nor any future trials fear,

For we shall safe arrive at last!

1 FAITH gives a holy glow to sense,
When near at hand she spies
Her grand, divine inheritance,
Eternal in the skies!

2 My longing soul for rescue calls!
And yet she waiting sings;
Looks through her failing prison-walls,
And longs to stretch her wings!

3 Sometimes the Everlasting Hills
Through ev'ry chink appear,-
And strange mysterious joy she feels,
Though yet a pris'ner here!

4 The beams of Heav'n shine sweetly in
Through all the shrinking clay;-
Visions of boundless bliss are seen,
And everlasting day!

5 Now let this prison, flesh, decay,
The ruins wider grow!-

Till, glad to see th' enlarged way,
I stretch my pinions through!

"And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes, and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb," &c. Rev. vii. 13—17. 1Q. EXALTED high at God's right hand,

Nearer the throne than cherubs stand, With glory crown'd, in white array, My wond'ring soul says, Who are they? 2 A. These are the saints belov'd of God, Wash'd are their robes in Jesu's blood! More spotless than the purest white, They shine in uncreated light!

3 Q. Brighter than angels, lo, they shine! Their glories great, their joys divine! Tell me their origin, and say

Their order, what? and whence came they?

4 A. Thro' tribulation great they came, They bore the cross, sustain'd the shame; Within the living temple blest,

In God they dwell, in God they rest! 5 Q. And does the cross. thus prove their gain? And shall they thus for ever reign, Seated on thrones divine, to praise The wonders of redeeming grace? 6 A. Hunger they ne'er shall feel again, Nor burning thirst shall they sustain ! To wells of living water led,

By God the Lamb for ever fed! 7 Q. Unknown to mortal ears they sing The secret glories of their King! Tell me the subject of their lays, And whence their loud exalted praise? 8 A. Jesus, the Saviour, is their theme,They sing the wonders of his Name! They sing the wonders of his grace,His Godhead, Blood, and Righteousness! Amen, they cry, to Him alone Who reigns upon th' eternal throne! They give him glory and again

Repeat his praise, and say, Amen!

1 ABSENT from flesh!—O blissful thought! What unknown joys this moment brings! Freed from the mischiefs sin hath wrought, From pains and tears, and all their springs!

[ocr errors]

2 Absent from flesh!-illustrious day!-
Surprising scene!—triumphant stroke
That rends the prison of my clay,
And I can feel my fetters broke!
3 Absent from flesh!-then rise, my soul,
Where feet or wings could never climb!
Where seas of bliss for ever roll;
Far, far above the joys of time!
4 Where uncreated glories shine,-
Glowing in one Eternal Day!

Rise, rise, my soul!-the world resign!
Jesus invites, and points the way!

1 O DEATH! thou once terrific king,
But now no more the source of dread;
The law gave vigour to thy sting,
But now the law itself is dead!

2 Blest with the Prince of endless life,
Who answer'd all the law's demands,
Death fears have ceas'd with legal strife;
And now my spirit dauntless stands!
3 Nay, more than this my Lord has given,
He's made this last great foe my friend!-
The break of day!-the dawn of heaven!-
My spirit's rest!-my journey's end!—
4 The nurse, my spirit to undress

Of all this sordid garb of clay!-
My introducer to the place

Where I shall glow in heav'n's array!

5 The op❜ner of my prison door!-
The conq'ror of my ev'ry foe!-
The key of treasure to the poor!-
The death of ev'ry mortal woe!
6 The cure of sickliness and pain,
Or of the body, or the mind!-
The everlasting death of sin—
That root of wo of ev'ry kind!
7 The sacred place where God appoints
T' invest me with the kingdom given!
And where my spirit he anoints
With all the mystic bliss of Heaven!
8 Hail, sacred point!-where flesh, and sins,
And time, and death itself, expire;-
That sacred point-where sorrow ends,
Where hell departs, and Heav'n begins!
9 But, O! 'tis not of death I sing,-
But Christ, my Lord, of law the end!
Who bore my curse, and spoil'd his sting,
And thus made death himself my friend!

AFTER SERMON.

1 FULL of unutterable grace,
Jesus, mine eye of faith surveys !
Jesus, whate'er thou art is mine,
Fountain of excellence divine!
