SPIRIT of truth, essential God,
who didst the saints of old inspire, And by false doctrines would deceive
Shed in their hearts thy love abroad, And touch their lips with sacred fire: Thou Guide divine, who dost impart The truth to man, instruct each heart.
4 Lord, from such teachers us pre
serve, As from the holy scriptures swerve,
The souls who love thee, and believe.
5 The cause and glory, Lord, are thine; Thy word is pure and truth divine: Assist us to rely on thee, And keep us thine eternally.
3 More priz'd than
Sweeter than honey to my taste,
4 Let these, O God, my soul convert, And make thy servant wise; Let these be gladness to my heart, The day-spring to my eyes. 5 By these may I be warn'd betimes; Who knows the guile within Ż Lord, save me from presumptuous crimes, Cleanse me from secret sin.
