COURTEOUS READER, Fthou art acquainted with the Divine Life, I need not wform thee, ibat altho' allibe Ads and Exercises of De

votion are sweet and delightful, yet we never resemble the Blessed Worshippers above more than mben we aré joitiing together in public Devotions, and with Hearts and Lips unfrigned, singing Praises to him who sittetb upon tbe Ibrone for ever. Confequently, Hymns compujed for juch a Purpose ought to abound much in Thanksgiving, and to be of such a Nature, that ail who attend may join in them without being obliged to fing Lies, or not fing at all.Upon ibis Plan the following Colle&tion of Hymns is founded. -They are intended purely for social Worship, and so altered in some Particulars, that I think all may safely concur in using then-They are short, because I think three or four Stanzas, with a Doxology, are jufficient to be jung at one Time. I am no great Friend to long Sermons, long Prayers, or long Hymns. They generally weary infead of edifying, and therefore I think should be aroided by those who prefide in any public Worshipping Asembly. Besides, as the Generality of those who receive the Gospel are commonly be poor of the Flick, I have studied Cbeanefs, as well as Concisenejs,Much in a little is what God gives ins in bis Word And the more we imitate such a Method in our public Performances and Devotions, the nearer we come up to the Pata tern given us in the Mount. Iibink myJelf justifiable in publibing fome Hymns by way of Dialogue for the Use of the Society, because something like it is praktised in our Caibedral Churches; but much more to because the Celestial Choir is represented in the Book of the Revelations, an fwering one another in tbeir beavenly Anthems. That we

be inspired and warmed with a like divine Fire whill finging below, and be translated after Death to join with ibem in finging the song of Moses and the Lamb above, is the earnest Prayer of, Courteous Reader,

Tby ready Servant, for Christ's Seke,
