The fame

leeves that

there is a God,

and applyes

beleeve and apply the promises of falvation,

faith both be through Chrift, is the fame faith whereby we beleeve the Scripture, and that there is a God that made both Heaven and Earth. There is no diffethe promises 'rence in this faith; yea, that juftifying faith by which thou art faved, arifeth from the beleefe of thefe principles; even as it was the fame eye, whereby the Ifraelites did fee the Mountains and Trees,and other objects; and by which they faw the brazen Serpent. No man beleeves juftification by Christ,but his faith is mainly grounded upon this Word of God; for in Scripture wee finde that Iefus Christ is come in the flesh, and that hee is a Lambe flaine for forgiveneffe of finnes; that hee is offered to every creature, that a man must thirst after him,and then take up his Croffe and follow him. Now come to a beleever going out of the World, and aske him what hope hee hath to bee faved, and what ground for it hee will be ready to fay; I know that Chrift is come into the world, and that hee is offered up,

and I know that I am one of them that have a part in him; I know that I have fulfilled the conditions, as that I should not continue willingly in any knowne finne; that I should love the Lord Iefus, and defire to ferve him above all; I know that I have fulfilled thefe conditions, and for all this I have the word for my ground, if the groud whereon our faith is builded be the Word, then it is builded on a fure Rocke, and the gates of hell,Satan, and all his temptations shall not prevaile against it:but against a strong fancy it may.

There

Therefore let us labour to ftrengthen our faith in these principles, That there is a GOD that made Heaven and Earth, and that the Scriptures is his Word,whereby his minde is revealed to us; that fo you may know what his will is, and what to expect from him upon all occafions.

There is one thing which remaines in this point, which we added in the third place: That, that God which we worship,is this God; for either it is that God whom we worship, or else there is no true God in the World: we are to propound it negatively,to take away all other falfe religions. For,if there was ever a God revealed in the World, he was the God of the lewes: and if he was the God of the lewes, then of the Chriftians; and if of the Chriftians,then furely of the Proteftants,and not of the Papifts; (for they doe in most points adde to the Garment of Chrift, and the Proteftants doe but cut off what they have added before) and if of the Proteftants, then furely of those that doe make confcience of their wayes,that doe not live loosely, but doe labour to please him in all things.

SERMON.

I9A1. 46.9.

Remember the former things of old, for I am GOD, and there is none elfe; 1am GOD, and there is none like mee.

He third thing which remaines, is this, That there is no other GOD: and it is an Argument which is often used in Scripture, to prove that the Lord is God, because there is none befides him; for fo you are to understand it: I am God; because there is no

other;

The third Ar gument, to prove that

God is.
There is no

other God be-
fides him.

that there is no other God.

I

The great neffe of his

other; this particle is so used many times,Efay 45. 22. I am GOD, and there is none elfe, there is none befide me; and this fhewes the falfeneffe of all other gods, and all other religions. The argument ftands thus, That if you looke to all former times, you shall fee that there was never any other God, or any other religion, but this which we profeffe. There are two arguments fet downe

in the Text:

1. Remember the former times, and you fhall alwayes finde it thus, that there is none befides

mee.

2 There is none like mee, faith the Lord : Take all other gods, and there is a wonderfull great difference betweene them and the God whom we profeffe; there is none like him. So that the point to be delivered hence, is this :

It is a great Argument to prove the Deitie, that there is none befides the LORD.

To open this to you, I will fhew

you;

I. What reafons the Scripture ufeth to prove, that there is none befides him.

2 We will give you fome inftances of it.
3 We will make fome uses of it.

From the first, you fhall finde in the Scripture thefe five Arguments, to fhew that there is no other GoD, but that the LORD is GoD alone, and that there is none befides him.

From the greatneffe of Gods Majestic, and the immenfitie of his workes; and that is the reafon Majestic and of the words here annexed, There is none like him: as in the fifth Verfe of this Chapter you shall fee

workes.
