4 A heart thy joys and griefs to feel,
A heart that cannot faithless prove,
A heart where Christ alone may dwell,
All praise, all meekness, and all love.

1

C. M.

GOD of eternal truth and grace,

Thy faithful promise seal!

Thy word, thy oath, to Abraham's race,
In us, even us, fulfil.

2 Let us, to perfect love restored,
Thy image here retrieve,
And in the presence of our Lord
The life of angels live.

3 That mighty faith on me bestow
Which cannot ask in vain,

Which holds, and will not let thee go,
Till I my suit obtain ;

4 Till thou into my soul inspire
The perfect love unknown,
And tell my infinite desire,
"Whate'er thou wilt, be done."

5 But is it possible that I

Should live and sin no more?
Lord, if on thee I dare rely,
The faith shall bring the power.

6 On me that faith divine bestow

Which doth the mountain move; And all my spotless life shall show The omnipotence of love.

[blocks in formation]

FOR a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free!

A heart that always feels thy blood
So freely spilt for me!

2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne,
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone;

3 An humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean;

Which neither life nor death can part
From him that dwells within ;

4 A heart in every thought renewed,
And full of love divine

e;

Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine!

5 Thy tender heart is still the same,
And melts at human woe:
Jesus, for thee distressed I am,
I want thy love to know.

6 My heart, thou know'st, can never rest,
Till thou create my peace;
Till, of my Eden re-possessed,
From every sin I cease.

7 Fruit of thy gracious lips, on me
Bestow that peace unknown,
The hidden manna, and the tree
Of life, and the white stone.

8 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart !
Čome quickly from above,

Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of love.

THOU

344

1 THOU hidden love of God, whose height,
Whose depth unfathomed, no man knows,
I see from far thy beauteous light,
Inly I sigh for thy repose;
My heart is pained, nor can it be
At rest, till it finds rest in thee.

2 Thy secret voice invites me still

The sweetness of thy yoke to prove;
And fain I would; but though my will
Seems fixed, yet wide my passions rove;
Yet hindrances strew all the way;
I aim at thee, yet from thee stray.

3 'Tis mercy all, that thou hast brought
My mind to seek her peace in thee;
Yet while I seek but find thee not,
No peace my wandering soul shall see;
O when shall all my wanderings end,
And all my steps to thee-ward tend!

4 Is there a thing beneath the sun

That strives with thee my heart to share? Ah, tear it thence, and reign alone, The Lord of every motion there! Then shall my heart from earth be free, When it hath found repose in thee.

5 0 hide this self from me, that I

No more, but Christ in me, may live! My vile affections crucify,

Nor let one darling lust survive!
In all things nothing may I see,
Nothing desire or seek, but thee!

6 0 Love, thy sovereign aid impart,
To save me from low-thoughted care;

Chase this self-will through all my heart, Through all its latent mazes there, Make me thy duteous child, that I Ceaseless may, "Abba, Father," cry! 7 Ah no! ne'er will I backward turn; Thine wholly, thine alone, I am : Thrice happy he who views with scorn Earth's toys, for thee his constant flame! O help, that I may never move

From the blest footsteps of thy love! 8 Each moment draw from earth away

My heart, that lowly waits thy call;
Speak to my inmost soul, and say,
"I am thy love, thy God, thy all!"
To feel thy power, to hear thy voice,
To taste thy love, be all my choice.

YE

4-6s & 2-8 s.

E ransomed sinners, hear,
The prisoners of the Lord,
And wait till Christ appear,
According to his word:

Rejoice in hope, rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.
2 Let others hug their chains,
For sin and Satan plead,
And say, from sin's remains
They never can be freed:
Rejoice in hope, rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.
3 In God we put our trust;

If we our sins confess,
Faithful he is, and just,

From all unrighteousness

To cleanse us all, both you and me;
We shall from all our sins be free.

1

4 Surely in us the hope
Of glory shall appear;
Sinners, your heads lift up,
And see redemption near:
Again I say, Rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.

5 Who Jesu's sufferings share,
My fellow-prisoners now,
Ye soon the wreath shall wear
On your triumphant brow:
Rejoice in hope, rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.

6 The word of God is sure,

And never can remove,
We shall in heart be pure,
And perfected in love:
Rejoice in hope, rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.

7 Then let us gladly bring
Our sacrifice of praise,
Let us give thanks, and sing,
And glory in his grace:

Rejoice in hope, rejoice with me,
We shall from all our sins be free.

C. M.

OR ever here my rest shall be,
Close to thy bleeding side;
This all my hope, and all my plea,
For me the Saviour died!

2 My dying Saviour, and my God,
Fountain for guilt and sin,
Sprinkle me ever with thy blood,
And cleanse, and keep me clean.
