formed his three sizes of the Lutheran Bible to our Rules; and is ready to supply us with any number of copies, at moderate prices.

:

I reached this city on the 10th and shall now report the results of my intercourse with the friends of our cause, and lay before you the arrangements which we have agreed upon with the view of extending the circulation of the Holy Scriptures in this land. Professors Schubert, Buchta, and Schnorr have willingly agreed to take charge of a depôt for the sake of the 1700 Students who attend the Catholic University in this city; of which number, upward of 600 are studying Theology; and the most of whom are said to be totally destitute of Bibles in any language, and are so poor that they cannot purchase them. I have therefore to propose, that 200 Hebrew Bibles from Bâsle, 300 Greek Testaments from Leipzig, and 600 of Van Ess's Testaments, in different sizes, from Sulzbach, be placed at the disposal of the above-mentioned three friends, for distribution according to our Rules.

There is a small branch of the Bavarian Bible Society established among the Protestants who reside here; but their number is not above 6000 souls, amidst a population of 54,000 Catholics, and 500 Jews. Great exertions are now making among the Protestants to restore sound principles to their Churches and Schools; and, in many parts, with pleasing effects: and, in a few weeks, they have the prospect of obtaining a Gospel Ministry here—a privilege which they have never yet enjoyed, since they obtained liberty of Public Worship. The President of the General Consistory, Von Roth, Professor Schubert, with several other valuable friends, whose names I forbear to mention, have shewn me great kindness.

Bâsle, Sept. 2, 1829.

WITH the Rev. T. Blumhardt, Mr. Schnell, and other friends here, I have passed, I trust, a few useful days. The inclosed application of the Bâsle Missionary Society is the result of our united deliberations. They are desirous of employing their two printing-presses at Schushi, on the frontier of Persia, in printing the Scriptures for the Tribes in that neighbourhood: and the most able of their Missionaries have already devoted themselves to the Translation of the New Testament into the Eastern Dialect of the Modern Armenian. In making this Translation, they have the assistance of the ablest among the Armenian Clergy. Since the death of Dr. Zohrab of Paris, I have no hope of being able to do any thing with the specimen of the Gospel of St. Matthew in this dialect, sent to us from Schushi last year: and after the information which I have received from Mr. Blumhardt, on the need there is for this version among the great body of the Armenian Nation, who only possess their Ancient Armenian Version, I am prepared to recommend to the Committee to authorise the Bâsle Missionary Society to have 1000 copies of the Gospel of St. Matthew, in the Eastern Dialect of the Modern Armenian, printed at the Missionary Press at Schushi; and that the Missionaries be requested to continue the translation of the rest of the New Testament into this dialect, at the expense of our Society. The Committee will also find no difficulty in acceding to their proposal of preparing a Version of the Psalter in the same dialect, from the Hebrew.

The Depôt here under Mr. Schnell is in good order: it contains about 5000 copies of the Bible, in Hebrew, German, French, and Italian.

The Bâsle Bible Society continues its operations; and is said to be liberally supported by its friends. Their income, last year, is more than double what it was the year preceding: and, as their own Canton is nearly supplied with the Scriptures, they expend their funds in supplying the wants of the poor in the Upper Cantons. They have purchased about 50l. worth of Armenian Bibles for the Missionaries in Schushi; and copies of the German Bibles, for 25l., for the poor German Colonists in the South of Russia.

ALTHOUGH Our own Institution is but small, yet I can also say, with gratitude, that the blessing of God has been manifested in many cases: most of the copies of the sacred volume were received with great thankfulness towards the Lord and to our Benefactors. A peasant, in particular, made a deep impression on me by what he said, it was uttered in so earnest a manner; and I will endeavour to repeat it in his own words-"I hear so much," said he, "of these books, that I could wish to obtain one of them. I am told, that if a person reads them, he is turned quite upside down. Now, I am not exactly quite wicked, but I am often very full of anger; and perhaps I may also learn how to reform myself."

From the Rev. J. Kam, Vice President of the Amboyna Bible Society. January 15, 1829.

I RECEIVED, with great pleasure, your Circular, intended for the information of your friends, and indeed of every friend of the cause of God. The subject matter of it, whilst it made a deep impression on my mind, was at the same time very encouraging, when I looked back on that Society which has hitherto been, and, under the protection of God, ever will be, a blessing to all the inhabitants of our globe. Assuredly, the Angels in heaven will rejoice over your exertions, and your labours of love, in magnifying the Redeemer, by distributing the word of life, and pointing out the way of Salvation to poor sinners, as contained in the sacred volume! Many tears of gratitude have been shed here by those who have obtained the divine treasure-a treasure far surpassing that of the richest earthly monarchs. Not Croesus himself, when seated on his golden throne, could have felt as happy as one of my poor Malays, on being presented with a copy of the word of God.

This information, My dear Sir, will suffice, by way of answer to your first important inquiry, "Whether there still exists a desire in our Malacca Archipelago after the word of life?"

As to your second question, "Whether those who have obtained copies of the Holy Scriptures are anxious to read them, and to examine into their important contents?" I can only say thus much, that every Saturday evening I make a point of catechizing my flock, in order to ascertain their experience in religious knowledge, as founded on the word of God and I must say, that many of them appear to me to make good use of it; not only by reading it, but also by committing a number of beautiful passages to memory. It is truly a matter of encouragement and delight to me, when, seated in my little Chapel, I

have an opportunity of ascertaining the progress which they have made, in becoming acquainted with the contents of the Holy Scriptures.

A fact which tends to manifest the power of the truth of the Gospel, is, that, in many parts of the Moluccas, idolatry has given way to it; and morality, founded on the word of God, is gradually increasing among the inhabitants.

From Mr. Charles Stokes Dudley.

Hull, July 6, 1829. THE same unmerited mercy which I have had so often to commemorate is still graciously vouchsafed. On the 29th ult. the Annual Meeting of the Hull Auxiliary Society was held, in the Mariners' Church; the Right Worshipful the Mayor in the Chair. In consequence of the Divine Blessing on the measures adopted last year for improving the organization of this old and important Auxiliary and its dependencies, a considerable increase has been experienced, both in the Receipts and Issues. The amount received this year is 870l., being 340l. more than in the year preceding; while the number of Bibles and Testaments distributed is 2286, being an excess of more than 300 over the issues of the last year. The increase, in both respects, is mainly attributable to the Ladies' Associations, whose Reports afford very satisfactory evidence of the moral benefits derived from the Institution.

The LOAN STOCKS appear to be in constant requisition, and to be much valued in one Association, the number of such copies has been nearly doubled, in order to enable the Collectors to meet the demands of the Poor. In another Association, the Collectors state, that "two Apprentices, having been permitted by their Master to attend the last Annual Meeting, were so much impressed with what they heard, as to be induced to lay by a part of their wages, as they could spare it, for the purchase of two 10s. Bibles: at the first visit of the Collector, their savings amounted to 78. 8d.; and they have continued their regular

subscriptions to the present time." May the copies thus obtained, applied by the Holy Spirit, enable them to obey the sacred admonition "Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto, according to Thy word"! I was gratified in finding, from the Report of a Third Association, another proof that those who have felt the value of the Scriptures themselves will make a sacrifice in order to supply the precious boon to others :-"A female servant, in one of our districts, subscribed for two Testaments, which she sent to two poor persons whom she had found destitute of the word of life."

That exemplary Institution, the Hull Marine Bible Association, has also increased in efficiency in the course of twelve years, it has dispersed, among the sea-faring population, more than 4300 copies of the Scriptures, not only without at all drawing upon the funds of the Auxiliary Society, but actually aiding, by free contributions, the proportion applicable to general purposes.

During the last week, Six Public Meetings have been held, of the Branch Societies and Associations connected with the Hull Auxiliary. That at Hedon was rendered peculiarly interesting by the presence, on the platform, of a young Christian Hindoo, Raphael Michael, who has accompanied the Rev. Mr. Sawyer from India, and who repeated a Hymn in praise of the Redeemer, in the Tamul Language.

Bridlington Quay, July 11, 1829. AFTER attending a very interesting Meeting at Welton, on the 3d instant, when a Branch Society and Ladies' Association were established, I had the satisfaction of meeting our Beverley friends on the 6th, and of finding that the revival of this Society two years ago, by means of the Ladies' Association then established, has not proved a merely temporary excitement. During a period of fifteen years, the average annual income of the Auxiliary, from all sources, scarcely exceeded 501., and during the latter half of this time was reduced to about 301.; while the number of Bibles and Testaments annually distributed seldom exceeded 100. But during the last two years, more than 4507. have been received, nearly 1000 copies distributed, and 1200 Subscribers obtained; while the Ladies' Association has not only left the entire funds of the Auxiliary free for the general object, but has already voted nearly 100l. to the Parent Society. The Ladies have derived great encouragement from the general and cordial support of all classes, of which many evidences are given in their Report. "Well," said one, "it is time for us Poor to give and to do something, now that the Rich give their time and pains to the work." Another Collector having expressed a desire to decline the acceptance of a free contribution always cheerfully tendered, from an apprehension that it could not be conveniently spared, was promptly answered, “But you shall have it; aye, that you shall, as long as I have it to give! We have, to be sure, four little bairns; but I believe neither they nor we shall ever be a bit the poorer for lending our aid to any thing good.” Among the collateral advantages of their Institution, the Ladies enumerate the establishment of an Anti-Slavery Association, and Clothing Society: by the latter of which, many indigent persons, discovered by the Collectors, have been greatly benefited.
