GLASGOW

THE

GLASGOW COMMITTEE

OF THE

LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY, To all who make mention of the LORD, who keep not filence, and give him no reft, till he establish, and till he make Jerufalem a praife in the earth.

DEAR CHRISTIAN BRETHREN,

THE approach of the glorious MILLENNIUM, when ❝ the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the fea," Ifa. xi. 9. has excited the attention of real Chriftians of late; for the coming of which many millions of prayers have been offered up. by this and preceding generations, and are depending before the throne of God in heaven: any appearance, in Divine Providence, in our day, of fulfilling these prayers, and haften. ing that happy period to the Church of God upon earth, muft afford the ftrongest confolation to every fubject of Chrift's kingdom.

THAT this bleffed period will certainly arrive, we are fully affured by many infallible pro. mifes in the word of God; fuch as, Gen. xxii. 18. "In thy feed fhall all the nations of the earth be bleffed." Pfal. ii. 8.“ Ask of me, and I fhall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermoft parts of the earth for thy poffeffion." Pfal. xxii. 27. "All the ends of the world fhall remember, and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations fhall worship before thee." Pfal. lxviii. 31. Princes fhall come out of Egypt, Ethiopia fhall foon ftretch out her hands unto God." Pfal. lxxii. 17 "His name fhall endure for ever: his name fhall be continued as long as the fun: and men fhall be bleffed in him all nations fhall call him bleffed." Ifa ii. 2. And it fhall come to pafs in the laft days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it." Ifa. xlv. 22. "Look unto me, and be ye faved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none elfe." Ita. xlix. 6. "It is a light thing that thou shouldeft be my fervant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to reftore the preferved of Ifrael: I will alfo give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayeft be my falvation unto the end of the earth." ifa. lii. 10. "The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations: and all the ends of the earth fhall fee the falvation of our God." Jer. xvi. 19. The Gentiles fhall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies,...... vanity, and things wherein there is no profit." Dan. ii. 35. “The ftone that fmote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth." Dan. vii. 13 14 Ifaw in the night vifions, and behold, one like the Son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages fhould ferve him: his dominion is an everlafting dominion, which fhall not pats away, and his kingdom that which fhall not be deftroyed." Zeph. iii. 9. " I will turn to the people a pure language, that they may call upon the name of the LORD, to ferve him with one confent." Zech. xiv. 9. " And the LORD fhall be king over all the earth: in that day fhall there be one LORD. and his name one." Mal. i. 11. From the rifing of the fun even unto the going down of the fame, my name fhall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incenfe fhall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name fhall be great among the heathen, faith the LORD of hofts." Matt. xxiv. 27. "As the lightning cometh out of the east, and fhineth even unto the weft: fo fhall alfo the coming of the Son of Man

be." John xii. 32. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” Rev. xi. 15. "And there were great voices in heaven, faying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he fhall reign for ever and cver."..

AFTER many precious promifes, Ezek. xxxvi. it is added verfe 37." Thus faith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the houfe of Ifrael, to do it for them." It must be a token for good, Pial. cii. 16-20. that a spirit of grace and fupplication has been poured out of late on many in America, many in the Southern part of our Ifland, and also in this; that many thousands have agreed on the evening of the firft Monday of every month, to offer up joint fupplications at a throne of grace, for the converfion of the Jews; the downfall of Antichrift, and every falfe religion; and the coming of Chrift's kingdom, of righteoufnefs, peace and joy in the Holy Ghoft, univerfally upon earth; but, to confiding in the Divine promifes, and praying for their accomplishment, other means must be added, THE benevolent defign of fending the Gofpel of Salvation to Heathen nations, by any denomination of Chriftians of late, has fixed the attention of the Chriftian world; and any intelligence of the fuccefs attending their exertions, through their Miffionaries, is fought after with an eagerness, which far exceeds the defire of the public to know any transactions whatever of other men, either at home or abroad; and, “like cold water to a thirsty soul,” affords inexpreffible fatisfaction and joy, to every friend and follower of Jetus Chrift. But can they be called Chriftians who do not all in their power for propagating the gospel among Heathen nations? All Gallio like perfons in this refpect, are walking contrary to the precept, and example of the benevolent Redeemer. Mat. vii. 12. "All things whatfoever ye would that men fhould do to you, do ye even so to them.” 2 Cor. viii. 9. "Yeknow the grace of our Lord Jefus Chrift, that, though he was rich, yet for your fakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich."

THE GENERAL MEETING of Minifters and priváte Chriftians in London, on the 22d, 23d, and 24th of September laft, drew the attention of all the well-wishers to religion and mankind in Great Britain, who were apprized of it. People in general looked forward to it long before it was held, and anticipated the happinefs of those who should be favoured to be members of it; the glory that would redound to God, and the good to fellow men, that would flow from it. Nor were their expectations disappointed. Such folemnity, unanimity, and zeal for the glory of God, and good of men appeared among hundreds of minifters and thousands of people of different denominations, as were quite unprecedented in this lfland.

THAT the great work they are engaged in is of God, appears evidently from the felt fenfe of the Divine prefence in their different meetings; the approbation of their conduct by e. very unprejudiced Chriftian in Britain; the great pecuniary aid they have received in England, amounting to 10,000l. and what they will receive from Scotland; for instance, the inhabitants of Paifley, in a few days, have fubfcribed near 5ool. for them; the chearfulness with which praying Societies unite in afking the Divine bleffing on their endeavours; the readiness of Miffionaries to go on their account to Heathen nations, to fpread the knowledge of the Redeemer's name, more than twenty being now approved of, &c.

THESE, and other weighty confiderations, induced a few friends of Religion here, who had been inviolably attached to the London Miffionary Society from its commencement, to meet, and erect a Committee of faid Society. And it would give us real pleasure, were we made inftrumental in ftirring up others to take part in this molt neceffary, honourable and important work; which will not be in vain, if bleffed as a mean even of faving a fingle foul, which is of more value than the whole material world. "Go ye into all the world,
