[blocks in formation]

And thou, my soul, which turn'st with curious eye
To view the beams of thine own form divine,
Know, that thou canst know nothing perfectly,
While thou art clouded with this flesh of mine.

Take heed of overweening, and compare
Thy peacock's feet with thy gay peacock's train :
Study the best and highest things that are,
But of thyself an humble thought retain.

Cast down thyself, and only strive to raise
The glory of thy Maker's sacred name,
Use all thy powers that blessed Power to praise,
Which gives thee power to be, and use the same.
SIR JOHN DAVIS.

Keep thy heart pure, seek not the world's applause,
But heavenward lift thou thine aspiring soul;
Be true, be just-defend the widow's cause,
And spurn of vanity the soft control.

And oh! walk ever humbly with thy God,
Counting thine own best virtues but as dross ;
And looking forward to Heaven's blest abode,
Through Him who bore thy sins upon the cross!
LADY FLORA HASTINGS.

Child of dust, corruption's son,
By pride deceived, by pride undone,
Willing captive, yet be free,

Take my yoke, and learn of me.
I of heav'n and earth the Lord,
God with God, the eternal Word,-
I forsook my Father's side,
Toil'd and wept, and bled and died.

BOWDLER.

Oft have I turned my eyes within,
And brought to light some latent sin;
But pride, the vice I most detest,
Still lurks securely in my breast.

There, with a thousand arts, she tries
To dress me in a fair disguise;
To make a guilty, wretched worm
Put on an angel's brightest form.

She hides

my

follies from my eyes;

She lifts my virtues to the skies;

And, while the specious tale she tells,
Her own deformity conceals.

Rend, O my God! the veil away;
Bring forth the monster to the day;
Expose her hideous form to view,
And all her restless power subdue.

So shall humility divine

Again possess this heart of mine;
And God—the condescending God-
Make it His Spirit's loved abode.

ANON.

"Turn Thou me, and I shall be turned; for Thou art the Lord my God."JER. XXXI. 18.

Great God of pity and of love,
To Thee for help I'd flee;

But without Thee I cannot move
O Saviour, turn Thou me!

Thou art all-powerful to save,
I'd cling alone to Thee :

A sense of pardon'd guilt I crave—
O Saviour, turn Thou me!

Teach me to know my own proud heart,—

Its sin and misery:

My flesh

may shrink, (so sore the smart,)

Yet, Saviour, turn Thou me!

Destroy presumption in my breast;
Give true humility:

From false security and rest,
O Saviour, turn Thou me!

Thy gracious promises fulfil,
From Satan set me free;
From my own proud and selfish will,
O Saviour, turn Thou me!

Speak but the word—I shall be whole—

My kind Physician be!

From all that would ensnare my soul,
O Saviour, turn Thou me!

No more a willing captive led,
I yield my soul to Thee;

To ransom it, Thy blood was shed

Then, Saviour, turn Thou me!

[blocks in formation]

Thine be the victory!

To heavenly paths of joy and peace,

Now, Saviour, turn Thou me!

Breathe thoughts of pity o'er a brother's fall,
But dwell not with stern anger on his fault :
The grace of God alone holds thee, holds all ;

Were that withdrawn, thou, too, wouldst swerve and halt.
