There is rest for the soul that on Jesus relies,
There's a home for the homeless prepar'd in the skies;
There's a joy in believing, a hope and a stay
That the world cannot give, nor the world take away.

O had I the wings of a dove, I would fly,

And mount on the pinions of faith to the sky,

When the still and small breathing to earth that was given, Shall be changed to the anthems and chorus of heaven! Wм. M'COMB.

Over the raging waves of human will,
The Saviour's Spirit walk'd, and all was still.

The stormy winds raved loud, and vex'd
The chafing waters' troubled breast-
When lo! the voice of Mercy spake,
And soothed the ruffled waves to rest.

Saviour! when Thy poor wayward child
Droops faithlessly 'midst doubt or ill,
Thy voice shall calm the inward strife,
And bid her aching heart "Be still."

LADY FLORA HASTINGS.

Nor human tongue can tell, nor human thought,
Save in experience, the peace

Thy Spirit in the soul through all her powers,
Diffuses-peace of an indwelling God.

GRINFIELD.

When groves by moonlight silence keep,
And winds the vexed waves release,

And fields are hush'd, and cities sleep:
-Lord, is not that the hour of peace?

When infancy at evening tries,
By turns, to climb each parent's knees,
And gazing, meets their raptured eyes,
-Lord, is not that the hour of peace?

In golden pomp, when autumn smiles
O'er hill and dale with rich increase,
Man his full barns exhulting piles;
-Lord, is not that the hour of peace?

When Mercy points where Jesus bleeds,
And Faith beholds thine anger cease,
And Hope to black despair succeeds ;
This, Father, this alone is peace!

GISBORNE.

Sweet as the shepherd's tuneful reed,
From Zion's mount I heard the sound:
Gay sprang the flowrets of the mead,
And gladden'd nature smiled around:
The voice of peace salutes my ear,
And speaks the Lord, my Saviour, near:-

"Peace, troubled soul, whose plaintive moan, Has taught each scene the note of woe ;

I

Cease thy complaint, suppress thy groan,
And let thy tears forget to flow :
Behold, the precious balm is found,
That lulls thy pain, and heals thy wound.

As spring the winter, day the night,

Peace, sorrow's gloom shall chase away; And smiling joy, a seraph bright,

Shall tend thy steps, and near thee stay ; While Glory waves the immortal crown, And waits to claim thee for her own."

Who feels the worth of peace? He who has lost
Its gladdening light when threatening clouds are nigh;
He who has viewed the agony it cost

The Saviour of mankind that peace to buy.

Peace from the guilt of sin, the dread of death,—
From this world's evils, and from Satan's power;
A mind serene as eve's departing breath,

That sinks to sleep the last sabbatic hour.

:

'My peace I give :"-what wondrous words are those ! Who knows their import, and their full increase? None ever will, till this low life shall close,

And heaven reveals full perfect, deathless peace!

EDMESTON.

I bow me low within the Gospel's fane,

I find a Saviour there, and there I rest;

He pardons guilt, He heals and soothes my pain; Flee, flee, distracting thoughts, and quit my breast, Whate'er my God decrees is wisest, and is best.

There is the home, the land of birth,

Of all we highest prize on earth ;
The storms that rack this world beneath
Must there for ever cease;

The only air the blessed breathe

Is purity and peace.

Oh happy, happy land in thee

Shines the unveil'd divinity;

Shedding through each adoring breast

A holy calm, a halcyon rest;

And those blest souls, whom death did sever,

Have met to mingle joys for ever. Razeta M

Oh, soon may heav'n unclose to me,#

Oh, may I soon that glory see!

And my faint, wearied spirit stand
Within that happy, happy land!

Source and Giver of repose!

Singly at Thy will it flows,
Peace and happiness are Thine,

Mine they are, when Thou art mine!
