CHAP. XII.

1 Christ reproveth the blindness of the Pharisees concerning the breach of the sabbath, 3 by Scriptures, 9 by reason, 13 and by a miracle. 22 He healeth the man possessed that was blind and dumb. 31 Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall never be forgiven. 36 Account shall be made of idle words. 38 He rebuketh the unfaithful, who seek after a sign: 49 and sheweth who is his brother, sister, and mother.

AT that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck 'the ears of corn, and to eat.

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do 'upon the sabbath day.

3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read "what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

4 How he entered into the house of God, and

unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Through thy precepts I get understanding therefore I hate every false way. ROм. vii. 22: I delight in the law of God after the inward man. 1 JOHN, v. 3: His commandments are not grievous.

a DEUT. xxiii. 25: When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn. MARK, ii. 23: And it came to pass, that he went through the corn-fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. LUKE, vi. 1, &c And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn-fields, and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

b Exod. xxxi. 15: Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

LEV. viii. 31: And Moses said unto Aaron, and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it. do. xxiv. 9: And it [the shew-bread] shall be Aaron's and his sons, and they shall eat it in the holy place for it is most holy unto him, of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, by a perpetual statute.

fNUM. xxviii. 9, 10: And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour.— This is the burnt-offering of every sabbath. JOHN, vii. 22, 23: Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision,-and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man; if a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

8 2 CHR. vi. 18: But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven, and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built! 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

9 And when he was departed thence, 'he went into their synagogue:

10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, *Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

11 And he said unto them, 'What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and "if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

LUKE, vi. 7 The Scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day: that they might find an accusation against him. do. xiii. 14: The ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. do. xiv. 3: Jesus answering, spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? JOHN, ix. 16: Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man which is a sinner do such miracles? and there was a division among them.

m EXOD. xxiii. 4,5: If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee, lying under his burden, and wouldst forbear to help him; thou shalt surely help with him. DEUT. xxii. 4: Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass, or his ox, fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them thou shalt surely help him, to lift them up again.

13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it

was restored whole,' like as the other.

14 ¶ Then the Pharisees went out, "and held a council' against him, how they might destroy him. 15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And 'charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 'Behold my servant, whom I have chosen ; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased : I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20 'A bruised reed shall he not break, and
