7 Oh, shew that in our low estate,
No blessing for us is too great;
We plead thy Son, we plead thy word,
O Founder, Patron, bounteous Lord!

109. 11s. L. H. C. (R.)

Comfort for the Church in Trouble.

1 O ZION! afflicted with wave upon wave, Whom no man can comfort, whom no man

can save;

With darkness surrounded, by terrors dis may'd,

In toiling and rowing thy strength is de cay'd.

2 Loud roaring the billows now nigh over whelm,

But skilful's the Pilot who sits at the helm, His wisdom conducts thee, his pow'r thee defends,

In safety and quiet thy warfare he ends. 3 "Ofearful! O faithless!" in mercy he cries, My promise, ny truth, are they light in thine eyes?

Still, still I am with thee, my promise shall stand,

Thro' tempest and tossing I'll bring thee
to land.

Forget thee I will not, I cannot, thy name
Engrav'd on my heart doth for ever remain;
The palms of my hands whilst I look on,
I see

The wounds I receiv'd, when suff'ring for
thee.

5 I feel at my heart all thy sighs and thy

groans,

For thou art most near me, my flesh and my bones;

In all thy distresses thy Head feels the pain; Yet all are most needful, not one is in vain. 6 Then trust me, and fear not; thy life is

secure:

My wisdom is perfect, supreme is my power;

In love I correct thee, thy soul to refine, To make thee at length in my likeness to shine.

7 The foolish, the fearful, the weak are my

care,

The helpless, the hopeless, I hear their sad

pray'r;

From all their afflictions my glory shall spring,

And the deeper their sorrows the louder they'll sing."

Christian Love.-For a Church Meeting..

1 SWEET is the love, that mutual glows
Within each brother's breast;

And binds in gentiest bands each heart,
All blessing, and all blest.

2 Sweet as the od'rous balsam pour'd
On Aaron's sacred head,

Which o'er his beard, and down his vest,
A breathing fragrance shed.

3 Like morning dews on Sion's mount,
That spread their silver rays,
And deck with gems the radiant pomp
Which Herinon's top displays.

4 To such the Lord of life and love
His blessings shall extend:

On earth a life of joy and peace

And life that ne'er shall end.

BAPTISM.

111. C. M. S. Deacon.

John the Baptist, Matth. iii.

1 WHEN John, the harbinger of Christ,
Was by Jehovah sent;

How did he warn the multitude,
And charge them to repent.

2 Thus would I charge you all to-day,
To flee from every sin;-
Oceans of water will not wash
A filthy conscience clean.

3 Nor yet by genealogy,

Are you the sons of God;
Grace doth not come by pedigree,
Descent, tradition, blood.

4 Think not to say within yourselves,
"We've Abra'm to our sire:"
Each barren tree must be cut down,
And cast into the fire,

5 Then put your hand unto the plough, And after Jesus go:

To every ordinance of Christ,

Exact obedience shew.

6 Then shall you have a conscious peace, And nothing you offend:

Here grow in knowledge, comfort, grace,
And then to heaven ascend.

112. Sevens. Swaine.

Believer's Baptism.

1 CHILDREN of the King of grace,
As from earth to heaven ye go,
Your Redeemer's footsteps trace,
Follow him in all ye do.

2 Since your Lord in Jordan once
Was baptiz'd to lead the way,
Every human rite renounce,
And his voice with joy obey.
3 His sweet presence you will find
Shining on you as ye go;

Cast your fears and cares behind;
Trust him, he will bring you through.
4 You are buried with the Lord,
In the Lord you rise again;

Now you live upon his word,
Who, to ransom you, was slain.
5 Hear the voice which speaks from heaven,
"If ye love me, keep my ways."
You that feel your sins forgiv'n,
Can you slight the God of grace?
6 Mighty Saviour! we obey

Thine august commanding voice;
Thou hast taught our feet the way,
In thy sanction we rejoice.
7 On thy promise we rely,

Hear us from thy lofty throne,
Shine upon us from on high,

Bless and seal us as thy own.

113. C. M. S. Deacon.

Jesus baptized in Jordan, Matth. iii. 13.
1 BEHOLD the Prince of Glory go
To wash in Jordan's flood;
See how the limpid waters flow
Around the Son of God.

2 Behold HIM buried in the flood,
(The emblem of his grave)
Who from the bosom of his God,
Came down a world to save.

3 The Holy Spirit, like a dove,
Comes, with his pinions spread,
Down from the shining realms of love,
And lights upon his head,

4 Now speaks the Father from his throne,
(Be earth and heaven amaz‘d!)
Jesus is my beloved Son,

[ocr errors]

In whom I am well pleas'd."
5 And shall not we behold the fact,
With wonder and delight?

If God approve, we boldly act :-
The ordinance is right.

Primitive Practice.

1 BELIEVERS in the days of old,
When by the Spirit led,
Went through the water to the fold,
In honor of their Head.
2 Lord, we desire to follow thee,
According to thy will;
Help us the proper way to see
And strictly to fulfil.

3 Let others to the fathers look,
And search their writings o'er;
The holy Bible is thy book,

And we desire no more.

4" Thus saith the Lord," shall be to us
Authority complete:

All else will be of little use,
Before the judgment seat.

115. 8.7. S. Deacon.

I am with you, Matth. xxviii. 20.

1 HOLY Jesus, now defend us;

On thy promise we depend:
All we want, in mercy send us;
Be our ever-present friend.
2 In obedience to our Saviour,

We expose ourselves to shame;
O! may we enjoy thy favour,
While we glorify thy name.
