We who in Christ believe,
That he for us hath died,
We all his unknown peace receive,
And feel his blood apply'd ;
Exults our rising soul,
Disburthen'd of her load,

And swells, unutterably full
Of glory, and of God.

3 His love, surpassing far
The love of all beneath,
We find within our hearts, and dare
The pointless darts of death
Stronger than death and hell,
The mystic power we prove;
And, conquerors of the world, we dwell
In heaven, who dwell in Love.

4 We by his Spirit prove

And know the things of God; The things which freely of his love He hath on us bestow'd:

His Spirit to us he

gave,
And dwells in us we know:

The witness in ourselves we have,.
And all its fruits we shew.

5

The meek and lowly heart
That in our Saviour was,
To us his Spirit doth impart,
And signs us with his cross;
Our nature's turn'd, our mind
Transform'd in all its powers;
And both the Witnesses are join'd,
The Spirit of God with ours.

6

Whate'er our pardoning Lord Commands, we gladly do: And guided by his, sacred Word, We all his steps pursue :

His glory our design,

We live our God to please;
And rise, with filial fear divine,
To perfect holiness.

HYMN 97.

4 lines 8's, and 2-6's.

NHOU great mysterious God unknown,
Whose love hath gently led me on,
E'en from my infant days:
Mine inmost soul expose to view,
And tell me if I even knew
Thy justifying grace.

2 If I have only known thy fear,
and follow'd, with a heart sincere,
Thy drawings from above;

Now, now,

the farther grace bestow,
And let my sprinkled conscience know
Thy sweet forgiving love.
Short of thy love I would not stop,
A stranger to the gospel-hope,
The sense of sin forgiven:

! would not, Lord, my soul deceive,
Without the inward witness live,
That antepast of heaven.

If now the witness were in me,
Would he not testify of thee,
In Jesus reconcil'd?

And should I not with faith draw nigh,
and boldly Abba, Father, cry,
Aud know myself thy child?
Whate'er obstructs thy pard'ning love,
Or sin, or righteousness, remove,
Thy glory to display;

Mine heart of unbelief convince,
And now absolve me from my sins,
And take them all away.

E

6 Father, in me reveal thy Son,
And to my inmost soul make known
How merciful thou art:

1

The secret of thy love reveal,
And by thine hallowing Spirit dwell
For ever in my heart.

HYMN 98.

UP

8 lines 7's, 6's, & 1-8.

PRIGHT both in heart and will,
We by our God were made;
But we turn'd from good to ill,
And o'er the creature stray'd:
Multiply'd our wandering thought,
Which first was fix'd on God alone,
In ten thousand objects sought
The bliss we lost in one.

2 From our own inventions vain
Of fancied happiness,
Draw us to thyself again,

And bid our wanderings cease;
Jesus, speak our souls restor'd,
By Love's divine simplicity;
Re-united to our Lord,
And wholly lost in thee!

PART III.

SECTION I.

1

Praying for Repentance.

HYMN 99. 6 lines 8's.

ATHER of Lights, from whom proceeds

FA

Whate'er thy every creature needs ;
Whose goodness providently nigh,
Feeds the young ravens when they cry:
To thee I look, my heart prepare ;
Suggest, and hearken to my prayer.

2 Since by thy light myself I see,
Naked, and poor, and void of thee;
Thy eyes must all my thoughts survey,
Preventing what my lips would say ;
Thou seest my wants, for help they call,
And, ere I speak, thou know'st them all.
3 Thou know'st the baseness of my mind,
Wayward, and impotent, and blind!
Thou know'st how unsubdu'd my will,
Averse from good, and prone to ill;
Thou know'st how wide my passions rove,
Nor check'd by fear, nor charm'd by love!
4 Fain would I know as known by thee,
And feel the indigence I see;

Fain would I all my vileness own,
And deep beneath the burden groan:
Abhor the pride that lurks within,
Detest and loathe myself and sin.
5 Ah, give me, Lord, myself to feel!
My total misery reveal:

1

A give me, Lord, (I still would say,)
A heart to mourn, a heart to pray :
My buniness this, my only care,
My life, my every breath be prayer!

HYMN 100. D. L.M.

JESUS, my Advocate above,

My Friend before the throne of Love
If now for me prevails thy prayer,
If now I find thee pleading there;
If thou the secret wish convey,
And sweetly prompt my heart to pray;
Hear, and my weak petitions join,
Almighty Advocate, to thine.

2 Fain would I know my utmost ill,
And groan my nature's weight to feel!

To feel the clouds that round me roll,
The night that hangs upon my soul:
The darkness of my carnal mind,
My will perverse, my passions blind,
Scattered o'er all the earth abroad,
Immeasurably far from God.
3 Jesu, my heart's desire obtain ;
My earnest suit present, and gain :
My fulness of corruption show,
The knowledge of myself bestow;
A deeper displacence at sin;
A sharper sense of guilt within;
A stronger struggling to get free;
A keener appetite for thee!

4 O Sovereign Love, to thee I cry;
Give me thyself, or else I die;

1.

Save me from death; from hell set free!
Death, hell are but the want of thee.
Quicken'd by thy imparted flame;
Sav'd, when possess'd of thee, I am:
My Life, my only heaven thou art;
O might I feel thee in my heart.

HYMN 101. 6 lines 7's.

AVIOUR, Prince of Israel's race,
Save me!-from thy lofty throne
Give the sweet relenting grace,
Soften this obdurate stone!
Stone to flesh, O God convert;
Cast a look, and break my heart!
2 By thy Spirit, Lord, reprove;
All mine inmost sins reveal;
Sins against thy light and love,
Let me see, and let me feel:
Sins that crucify'd my God,
Spilt again thy precious blood.
