SUNDAY NEXT BEFORE EASTER, APRIL 14TH, 1849.

THE DOCTRINE OF THE CROSS.

"We preach Christ crucified."-1 Cor. i. 23.

THE cross of Christ is the great object of divine contemplation-the great subject of divine communication. In it the wisdom of God is manifested; the power of God is concentrated. It is the theme whereon the mind of God has ever dwelt, and for ever and ever will dwell with satisfaction and complacency. And such as the cross is to God himself, such is it also to his people. It is the great meeting-place-the only meeting-place between the heart of the sinner and the heart of God. If we are not of one mind with him upon this subject, we must be in total estrangement from him. An error upon this point is a fundamental one; a failure here is fatal. The cross must either be the mercy-seat at which God meets the sinner's soul in peace and fellowship, or else "a great gulf fixed," to separate him to an immeasurable distance.

Nothing but the Spirit of God himself will. ever properly apply this subject, and impress it upon the heart of man. It can only be rightly
