brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. These things command and teach. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in so doing thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. 1 Tim. v. 17. 20, 21. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 1 Cor. ix. 16. For though I preach the Gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if 1 preach not the Gospel! 2 Tim. ii. 15. 25. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. In meekness instructing them that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. Tit. ii. 1. 7. But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity. Matt. v. 16. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Rom. ii. 21, 22. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? 1 Cor. ix. 27. But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection; lest that by any means when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast away. 2 Cor. vi. 3-7. Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: but in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; by pureness, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by kindness, by the

Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left. 1 Cor. xii. 9. But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.

SECTION VI.

Exod. xxi. 15. 17. And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. And he that curseth father and mother, shall surely be put to death. Deut. xxi. 18, 19. 21. If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of the city, and unto the gate of his place; and all the men of the city shall stone him with stones that he die: so shall thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. 2 Tim. iii. 2. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy. Deut. xxvii. 16. Cursed be he that setteth light by his father, or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. Prov. xvii. 25. A foolish son is grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him. Prov. xxx. 17. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Prov. xxviii. 7. Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son; but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. (See section 5. Duties of Parents.) Prov. xxix. 15. The rod, and reproof, give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shume. 1 Sam. iii. 13. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth: where I begin, I will also make an end. (See section 4. Duties of Servants.) Matt. 'xxv. 26. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou

wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed. Luke xii. 47. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. Rom. xiii. 2. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist, shall receive to themselves damnation. Ezra vii. 26. And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment. Jude viii. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, speak evil of dignities. Prov. xvi. 12. It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness. Isai. x. 1. Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed. Deut. i. 17. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small, as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you bring it unto me. Luke xix. 15. And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Prov. xxix. 4. The king by judgment establisheth the land; but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. Prov. xxxi. 4. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink. Psal. xii. 8. The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted. Eccles. iii. 12. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. Deut. xvii. 2. if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man, and a publican. therefore that despiseth, despiseth not hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. 2 Tim. iv. 3, 4. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and be turned unto fables. 1 Thes. ii. 4-6. But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the Gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth the hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. Matt. v. 19. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. John x. 12. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. 1 Tim. vi. 5. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. Tit. i. 11. Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake. Jer. xxiii. 1. Gen. ii. 18. 23, 24. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an

help meet for him. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore shall a man leave his father, and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh. John ii. 1, 2. And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage. Ephes. v. 23. 25. 28. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church and he is the Saviour of the body. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. So ought men to love their wives, as their own bodies, He that loveth his wife, loveth himself. Col. iii. 19, Husbands love your wives, und be not bitter against them. 1 Pet. iii. 7. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered. 1 Cor. vii. 3—5. Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves unto fasting and prayers; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 1 Pet. iii. 1. 6. Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands ; that if any obey not the word, they also may be won by the conversation of the wives. Even as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. Ephes. v. 22. 24. 33. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be unto their own husbands in every thing. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her
