SECTION II.

Phil. iv. 8. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Psal. xv. 12. 4. Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. Zech. viii. 16, 17. These are the things that ye shall do ; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth, and peace in your gates: and let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour: and love no false oath : for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord. 1 Thess. iv. 6. That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. Prov. xi. 1. A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight. Lev. xix. 35, 36. Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight or in measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt. Deut. xxv. 15. But thou shalt have a perfect und just weight, a perfect and a just measure thou shalt have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Prov. xxi. 3. 6. To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue, is a vanity tossed to and fro, of them that seek death. Matt. xxi. 12, 13. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money

changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them, it is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer ; but ye have made it a den of thieves. Hos. xii. 7. He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. Rom. xiii. 7. (See above.) Matt. xxii. 21. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's; and unto God the things which are God's. Col. iv. 1. Masters give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. Matt. xx. 1, 2. 9-11. 13, 14. For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the good man of the house, but he answered one of them and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Prov. iii. 27, 28. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to-morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. Psal. xxxvii. 21. The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again; but the righteous sheweth mercy and giveth. Matt. xviii. 23, 24. 27. 28. 32-34. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. Then the Lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt, But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants,

which owed him an hundred pence; and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. Then his lord after he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst it; shouldest thou not also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. Lev. vi. 1—5. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the Lord, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour; or hath found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely, in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein: then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto and give it unto him to whom it pertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering. Luke xix. 8. And Zaccheus stood and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor: and if I have taken any thing from any man, I restore him fourfold. Exod. xxii. 1—4. If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; if he hath nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double. Tit. ii. 10. Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. 1 Cor. iv. 2. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. Jer. xxix. 7. And

seek the peace of the city, whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. Heb. xiii. 16. But to do good and to communicate, forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. Prov. iii. 9. Honour the Lord with thy substance; and with the first-fruits of all thine increase. 1 Pet. iv. 9, 10. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Matt. v. 42. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Psal. xli. 1. Blessed is the man that considereth the poor and needy; the Lord will deliver him in the time of trouble. Isai. xxii. 8. But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand. Isai lviii. 6, 7. Is not this the fast that I have chosen ? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Luke xi. 41. But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. Luke xiv. 13, 14. But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the halt, and the blind; and thou shalt be blessed for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Jam. i. 27. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father, is this; To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. 1 Cor. vii. 20. Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Ephes. iv. 28. Let him that stole, steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 1 Tim. v. 8. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Prov. x. 22. The blessing of the

Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth : for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side, according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side, according to it. I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it, with the timber thereof, and the stones thereof.
