fulfilled, which was spoken by the Prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world. Matt. v. 13, 14. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 1 Pet. ii. 1. Wherefore laying aside all malice and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and evil speakings. 1 Cor. xv. 3. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. 2 Pet. ii. 12. But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption. Ephes. iv. 29. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephes. v. 3, 4. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient; but rather giving of thanks. Matt. xii. 36. But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. Job xv. 3. Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? Prov. x. 8. The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall. Prov. xvii. 27. He that hath knowledge spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. Eccles. x. 14. A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him who can tell. James i. 19. 26. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. 1 Sam. ii. 24. Nay, my sons: for it is no good report that I hear; ye make the Lord's people to transgress. Prov. v. 8, 9. Remove thy way far

from her, and come not nigh the door of her house; lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel. 1 Pet. iii. 10. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile. Prov. xvi. 28. A froward man soweth strife; and a whisperer separateth chief friends. Psal. ci. 5. Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer. Rom. iii. 8. And not rather (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. Psal. xii. 2, 3. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips, and with a double heart, do they speak. The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things. Prov. xx. 19. He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. Psal. cii. 8. Mine enemies reproach me, all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me. Psal. cxix. 22. Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies. 1 Pet. iv. 14. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 1 Cor. vi. 10. Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Tim. vi. 4. He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings. 1 Pet. iii. 9. Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing; but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 2 Cor. v. 11. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

SECTION IV.

Matt. v. 43-45. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy: but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Rom. xii. 14. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. Psal. xxxvii. 30. The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. Matt. v. 37. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Col.iv. 6. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how ye ought to answer every man. Matt. xii. 35. A good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth good things; and an evil man, out of the evil treasure, bringeth forth evil things. Prov. xv. 1. A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. Prov. xvi. 24. Pleasant words are as an honey-comb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. Eccles. x. 12. The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious: but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. Luke iv. 22. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? James iii. 2. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. James i. 26. If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

SECTION V.

2 Cor. x. 12. For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves; but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. Ephes. iv. 31, 32. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil-speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. 1 Pet. ii. 1, 2. Wherefore laying aside all malice and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and evil-speakings, as new-born babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. Mark vii. 22, 23. Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these things come from within and defile the man. Rom. i. 28-32. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

SECTION VI.

Jer. x. 10. But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Deut. xxxii. 4. He is the Rock, his work is

perfect; for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Psal. xxxi. 5. Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth. John i. 17. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Ephes. iv. 24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Prov. vi. 16, 17. These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. John viii. 44, 45. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Acts v. 3. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? (See preceding sections.)
