"Were we to say all we think of the Homilist, we might lay ourselves open to the charge of excess and exaggeration. We know of no publication marked by a larger amount of originality and power. Every page abounds in bold masculine thought. It is impossible to describe the relief one experiences in turning from the humdrum. dryasdust skeletons' and 'outlines' with which many preachers are so painfully and profitlessly familiar, and dipping into these refreshing pages. The intention of the Homilist is not to supply sermons for indolent or incompetent preachers, but stimulus and tonic for the true-hearted, hard-working, and genuine teacher. It does not deal in the 'ready-made,' but in the 'raw material.'"-Wesleyan Times.

Extracts from Reviews and Letters.

"The arrangement is particularly excellent, and the range of topics extensive. The editors have laboriously collected the best materials for praise-worship which our language yet affords. So far as we have examined the work, it may be truly said that every hymn carries us up to the very throne of God, and leaves us there."-Freeman.

"We very cordially welcome this volume, and we are bound to say that the selection of hymns is, on the whole, very judicious and comprehensive. It combines nearly all those of Watts's Psalms and Hymns, which, by general consent, are used in public worship, with addi tions from Montgomery and Conder, and many other authors. The arrangement of the hymns is excellent, and the subjects are sufficiently varied to fit the volume in an eminent degree for public, social, and private worship."-Eclectic Review.

"After a careful perusal of the volume of Psalms and Hymns, prepared for the use of the Baptist Denomination, and published by Mr. Green, I can conscientiously and with great pleasure recommend it for the simplicity of its arrangement, the variety of its metre, the general excellenc of its versification, and the devout spirit which it everywhere breathes. It is a marvel of cheapness and its adoption by the churches will contribute alike to their convenience and edification "Rochdale, Sept. 26, 1857. WILLIAM F. BURCHILL

"It is without an exception the best Hymn-Book with which I am acquainted; its intrinsie excellence so commends it to me, that I wish for it a most extensive sale."

"I like it exceedingly. The plan of incorporating the hymns taken from Dr. Watts with the other hymns under their respective heads is preferable, in my opinion, to that of appending them as a supplement. The getting up is very creditable and the price marvellously cheap."

"I am quite delighted with it. It supplies a great want. We shall introduce it as sOON, AP we can. You have conferred a boon upon the churches."

"The more I examine the book, the more fully do its excellences appear. I have seen most of our English hymn-books, and can sincerely say I consider this the best by far. I trust it will be universally received by the denomination."

** I much admire the arrangement. It is also a gem of cheapness."

"I will bring the book before my people at an early opportunity; and shall be happy if they adopt it, as I much approve of the collection."

"I like the collection of hymns very much, and think the arrangement good, and shall be glad to get rid of 'Psalms,'' First Book,' ' Second Book,' 'Third Book,' and 'Selection.""

"It is superior to any of the old books both for private devotion and for public worship.

shall endeavour to get it introduced."

**I like it so well that I intend to attempt its introduction here."

"I will urge the adoption of the book wherever I can. It must find acceptance; though possibly it will be a year or two before its employment is general."

"I have carefully looked through it, and most heartily approve it. It has been long much needed; and now, no doubt, will be hailed by all who have given their attention to hymnology with a glad welcome. I shall hope to introduce it in my own congregation.”

"I cannot but express my cordial approbation of the manner in which you have fulfilled your task. The selection seems to me to be very admirable, and the book itself is a marvel of cheapness."

"So far as I can judge it appears to be a most excellent compilation, and I should hepe would soon take the place of the two books now in use."

•The above are extracted from the very numerous letters the Publisher has received from Ministers throughout the country, all expressing thankful acknowledgments for the pub lication of a volume so greatly needed by the churches.

BENJAMIN GREEN, 62, PATERNOSTER ROW, LONDON

2

This Hymn Book has already been adopted by several churches, and assurances have been given that it will be introduced into many more when the large-type edition is ready. The following are from some of the ministers in whose congregations the book is now used:

"The Baptist Hymn-Book lately published by Mr. B. L. Green, is highly approved by the church and congregation at Trinity Chapel, Bradford. The uninitiated are no longer perplexed with first, second, and third books-first, second, and third parts-old editions and new editions, &c. &c. The hymns are readily found, and are, almost without exception, very excellent. "Bradford, Oct. 12, 1857.

H. J. BETTS."

"I am happy to inform you that the New Hymn-Book gives great satisfaction in my congre gation, and will do so still more when your larger type edition is in readiness. I have myself more than once carefully read through the entire volume, and I can most sincerely say that I never met with any collection of hymns more calculated for the heart and voice than this. Lee, Oct. 28, 1867. Yours faithfully, ROBT. H. MARTEN." "The gentlemen to whom the work has been delegated seem to have spared no labour, whilst they have been most happy in their choice. Many a weary spirit will be refreshed by their service. So gratified am I and the friends at Sydenham Chapel,' with the entire production, that we have adopted the Psalms and Hymns' as the book of our congregational praise unto God, and we feel that we cannot adequately thank you for placing it before us at a price within the means of the poorest. Faithfully yours,

"Perry Hill House, Sydenham.

J. W. TODD."
