3 In thine own appointed way
Now we seek thee, here we stay;
Lord, we know not how to go
Till a blessing thou bestow.

4 Send some message from thy word
That may joy and peace afford;
Let thy Spirit now impart

Full salvation to each heart.

5 Comfort those who weep and mourn; Let the time of joy return;

Those who are cast down, lift up,
Strong in faith, in love and hope.

6 Grant that all may seek and find
Thee a God supremely kind;
Heal the sick, the captive free,
Let us all rejoice in thee.

William Hammond, 1745.

1 To thy temple I repair;

Lord, I love to worship there,
When within the veil I meet

Christ before the

mercy-seat.

2 While thy glorious praise is sung,
Touch my lips, unloose my tongue,
That my joyful soul may bless
Thee, the Lord my Righteousness.

3 While the prayers of saints ascend,
God of love, to mine attend;
Hear me, for thy Spirit pleads;
Hear, for Jesus intercedes.

4 While I hearken to thy law,
Fill my soul with humble awe,
Till thy gospel bring to me
Life and immortality.

5 While thy ministers proclaim
Peace and pardon in thy name,
Through their voice, by faith, may I
Hear thee speaking from the sky.

6 From thy house when I return,
May my heart within me burn;
And at evening let me say,

I have walked with God to-day!
James Montgomery, 1825.

1 JESUS, we look to thee,

Thy promised presence claim;
Thou in the midst of us shalt be,
Assembled in thy name.

2 Thy name salvation is,

S. M.

Which here we come to prove;

Thy name is life, and health, and peace,
And everlasting love.

3 Not in the name of pride

Or selfishness we meet;

From nature's paths we turn aside,
And worldly thoughts forget.

4 We meet the grace to take

Which thou hast freely given;
We meet on earth for thy dear sake,
That we may meet in heaven.

5 Present we know thou art,
But oh thyself reveal!

Now, Lord, let every bounding heart
The mighty comfort feel.

6 Oh may thy quick'ning voice
The death of sin remove,

And bid our inmost souls rejoice
In hope of perfect love.

Charles Wesley, 1740.

1 How charming is the place
Where my Redeemer, God,
Unveils the beauties of his face,
And sheds his love abroad!

2 Not the fair palaces,

8. M.

To which the great resort,
Are once to be compared with this,
Where Jesus holds his court.

3 Here, on the mercy-seat,

With radiant glory crowned,
Our joyful eyes behold him sit,
And smile on all around.

4 To him their prayers and cries
Each humble soul presents;
He listens to their broken sighs,
And grants them all their wants.

5 To them his sovereign will
He graciously imparts,

And in return accepts, with smiles,

The tribute of their hearts.

6 Give me, O Lord, a place
Within thy blest abode,

Among the children of thy grace,
The servants of my God.

Samuel Stennett, 1787.

PSALM 84.

7s. DOUBLE.

1 PLEASANT are thy courts above
In the land of light and love;
Pleasant are thy courts below
In this land of sin and woe.
Oh, my spirit longs and faints
For the converse of thy saints,
For the brightness of thy face,
For thy fulness, God of grace.

2 Happy birds that sing and fly
Round thy altars, O Most High:
Happier souls that find a rest
In a heavenly Father's breast;
Like the wandering dove that found
No repose on earth around,
They can to their ark repair,
And enjoy it ever there.

3 Happy souls, their praises flow,
Even in this vale of woe;

Waters in the deserts rise,

Manna feeds them from the skies;
On they go from strength to strength,
Till they reach thy throne at length,
At thy feet adoring fall,

Who hast led them safe through all.

4 Lord, be mine this prize to win,
Guide me through a world of sin,
Keep me by thy saving grace,
Give me at thy side a place.
Sun and shield alike thou art,
Guide and guard my erring heart;

35.

Grace and glory flow from thee;
Shower, oh shower them, Lord, on me.

1 JESUS, God of love, attend,

H. F. Lyte, 1834.

7s. DOUBLE.

From thy glorious throne descend;
Answer now some waiting heart,
Now some hardened soul convert:
To our Advocate we fly,

Let us feel Immanuel nigh;
Manifest thy love abroad,

Make us now the sons of God.

2 Prostrate at thy mercy-seat
Let us our Belovéd meet,
Give us in thyself a part
Deep engraven on thine heart:

36.

Let us hear thy pardoning voice,
Bid the broken bones rejoice;
Condemnation do away,

Oh make this the perfect day!

Augustus M. Toplady, 1759.

[blocks in formation]

1 O God, by whom the seed is given, By whom the harvest blest;

Whose word, like manna showered from heaven,

Is planted in our breast;

2 Preserve it from the passing feet,
And plunderers of the air;
The sultry sun's intenser heat,
And weeds of worldly care.

3 Though buried deep, or thinly strewn,
Do thou thy grace supply;

The hope in earthly furrows sown
Shall ripen in the sky.

37.

Reginald Heber, 1827.

[blocks in formation]

1 ALMIGHTY God, thy word is cast
Like seed into the ground;
Oh may it grow in humble hearts,
And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ and man
This holy seed remove,

But give it root in praying souls
To bring forth fruits of love.

3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy,
But may it, in converted minds,
Produce the fruits of joy.

4 Let not thy word, so kindly sent
To raise us to thy throne,
