2 Baptize benighted nations, Lord,
And let thy saving truth be known;
Arise, thy royal power assume,

And claim the kingdoms for thine own.

3 Bless those who now in distant lands
Bid the untutored heathen live;
Be thou their guard, their God, their
Success to every effort give. [friend;
4 Eternal God, their hearts inspire;

Let each thy sacred presence prove;
Bid them go forth with holy zeal,
And loud proclaim thy dying love.

5 Mountains of unbelief and sin

Shall fall before thy sacred word; And millions, saved from death and hell, Shall own the Saviour as their Lord. Aaron C. H. Seymour, 1805.

891.

1 O SPIRIT of the living God,

In all thy plenitude of grace,

L. M.

Where'er the foot of man hath trod,
Descend on our apostate race.

2 Give tongues of fire and hearts of love,
To preach the reconciling word;
Give power and unction from above,
Where'er the joyful sound is heard.

3 Be darkness, at thy coming, light;
Confusion, order in thy path;
Souls without strength inspire with might,
Bid mercy triumph over wrath.

4 O Spirit of the Lord, prepare

All the round earth her God to meet; Breathe thou abroad like morning air, Till hearts of stone begin to beat.

5 Baptize the nations; far and nigh The triumphs of the cross record; The name of Jesus glorify,

Till every kindred call him Lord.

892.

James Montgomery, 1825.

1 ARM of the Lord, awake, awake!
Put on thy strength, the nations shake;
And let the world, adoring, see
Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.

2 Say to the heathen, from thy throne,
I am Jehovah, God alone:

Thy voice their idols shall confound, And cast their altars to the ground. 3 No more let human blood be spilt Vain sacrifice for human guilt! But to each conscience be applied The blood that flowed from Jesus' side. 4 Almighty God, thy grace proclaim, In every clime, of every name; Let adverse powers before thee fall, And crown the Saviour Lord of all. William Shrubsole, Sr., 1795.

1 SOVEREIGN of worlds, display thy power;
Be this thy Zion's favored hour:
Oh, bid the morning star arise;
Oh, point the heathen to the skies.

2 Set up thy throne where Satan reigns,
In western wilds and eastern plains;
Far let the gospel's sound be known;
Make thou the universe thine own.

3 Speak, and the world shall hear thy voice;
Speak, and the desert shall rejoice:
Dispel the gloom of heathen night;
Bid every nation hail the light.

Baptist Magazine, 1816.

894.
1 YE Christian heralds, go, proclaim
Salvation through Immanuel's name;
To distant climes the tidings bear,
And plant the rose of Sharon there.

2 He'll shield you with a wall of fire,
With flaming zeal your breasts inspire,
Bid raging winds their fury cease,
And hush the tempest into peace.

3 And when your labors all are o'er,
Then we shall meet to part no more;
Meet with the blood-bought throng, to fall,
And crown our Jesus Lord of all!

ISAIAH lxii. 6, 7.

Anon.

L. M.

1 INDULGENT Sovereign of the skies,
And wilt thou bow thy gracious ear?
While feeble mortals raise their cries,
Wilt thou, the great Jehovah, hear?

2 How shall thy servants give thee rest, Till Zion's mouldering walls thou raise ; Till thine own power shall stand confessed, And make Jerusalem a praise?

3 Look down, O God, with pitying eye,
And view the desolation round:
See what wide realms in darkness lie,
And hurl their idols to the ground.

4 Loud let the gospel trumpet blow,
And call the nations from afar:
Let all the isles their Saviour know,
And earth's remotest ends draw near.
Philip Doddridge, 1755.

1 GREAT God, the nations of the earth
Are by creation thine;

And in thy works, by all beheld,
Thy radiant glories shine.

2 But, Lord, thy greater love has sent
Thy gospel to mankind,
Unveiling what rich stores of

Are treasured in thy mind.

grace

3 Lord, when shall these glad tidings spread

The spacious earth around,

Till every tribe and every soul
Shall hear the joyful sound?

4 Send forth thy word, and let it fly,
Armed with thy Spirit's power;
Ten thousand shall confess its sway,
And bless the saving hour.

5 Beneath the influence of thy grace
The barren wastes shall rise

With sudden green and fruits arrayed,
A blooming Paradise.

6 Peace, with her olive crowned, shall stretch

Her wings from shore to shore;
No trump shall rouse the rage of war,
Nor murderous cannon roar.

7 Lord, for those days we wait; those days Are in thy word foretold;

Fly swifter, sun and stars, and bring
This promised age of gold.

Thomas Gibbons, 1769.

1 BEHOLD, the mountain of the Lord
In latter days shall rise
On mountain tops, above the hills,
And draw the wondering eyes.

2 To this the joyful nations round,

All tribes and tongues, shall flow;
Up to the hill of God, they'll say,
And to his house we'll go.

3 The beam that shines from Zion's hill
Shall lighten every
land;

The King who reigns in Salem's towers
Shall all the world command.

4 No strife shall vex Messiah's reign,
Or mar the peaceful years; [swords,
To ploughshares men shall beat their
To pruning-hooks their spears.

5 No longer hosts encountering hosts
Their millions slain deplore;
They hang the trumpet in the hall,
And study war no more.

6 Come, then, oh, come, from every land, To worship at his shrine;

And, walking in the light of God,
With holy beauties shine.

1 JESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Does his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

2 For him shall endless prayer be made,
And praises throng to crown his head;
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.
