HRIST, the Lord, is risen again,
Christ hath broken every chain;
Hark! angelic voices cry,
Singing evermore on high,
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
2 He who gave for us his life,
Who for us endured the strife,
Is our Paschal Lamb to-day!
We, too, sing for joy, and say,

Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
3 He who bore all pain and loss,
Comfortless, upon the cross,
Lives in glory now on high,
Pleads for us, and hears our cry;
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

4 Now he bids us tell abroad
How the lost may be restored,
How the penitent forgiven,
How we, too, may enter heaven!
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Michael Weisse. Tr. by Miss C. Winkworth.

260 The Lord is risen.

CHR

HRIST, the Lord, is risen to-day,
of men and angels say;

Raise your joys and triumphs high;
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply.

2 Love's redeeming work is done;
Fought the fight, the battle won:
Lo! the sun's eclipse is o'er;
Lo! he sets in blood no more.

7.

3 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal,
Christ has burst the gates of hell:
Death in vain forbids his rise;
Christ hath opened paradise.

4 Lives again our glorious King;
Where, O Death, is now thy sting?
Once he died our souls to save;
Where's thy victory, boasting Grave?

5 Soar we now where Christ has led,
Follow our exalted Head;

Made like him, like him we rise;
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

Ascension day.

Charles Wesley.

7.

AIL the day that sees Him rise,
Ravished from our wishful eyes!
Christ, awhile to mortals given,
Re-ascends his native heaven.

2 There the pompous triumph waits:
Lift your heads, eternal gates;
Wide unfold the radiant scene;
Take the King of glory in!

3 Circled round with angel powers,
Their triumphant Lord and ours,
Conqueror over death and sin,-
Take the King of glory in!

4 Him though highest heaven receives,
Still he loves the earth he leaves;
Though returning to his throne,
Still he calls mankind his own.
5 See, he lifts his hands above!
See, he shows the prints of love!
Hark, his gracious lips bestow

Blessings

on his Church below!

6 Saviour, parted from our sight, High above yon azure height, Grant our hearts

may thither rise,

Following thee beyond the skies.

Charles Wosley.

THE HOLY SPIRIT.

G

Earnest of endless rest. RACIOUS Spirit, Love divine, Let thy light within me shine! All my guilty fears remove; Fill me with thy heavenly love.

7.

2 Speak thy pardoning grace to me;
Set the burdened sinner free;
Lead me to the Lamb of God;
Wash me in his precious blood.

3 Life and peace to me impart;
Seal salvation on my heart;
Breathe thyself into my breast,
Earnest of immortal rest.

4 Let me never from thee stray;
Keep me in the narrow way;
Fill my soul with joy divine;
Keep me, Lord, forever thine.

HOLY SPIRIT, Truth divine!

7.

upon this soul of mine;

Word of God, and inward Light!
Wake my spirit, clear my sight.

2 Holy Spirit, Love divine!
Glow within this heart of mine;
Kindle every high desire;
Perish self in thy pure fire!

3 Holy Spirit, Power divine!
Fill and nerve this will of mine;
By thee may I strongly live,
Bravely bear, and nobly strive.

4 Holy Spirit, Right divine!
King within my conscience reign;
Be my law, and I shall be
Firmly bound, forever free.

The gracious Comforter.

Samuel Longfellow.

7.

RANTED is the Saviour's prayer,
Sent the gracious Comforter;
Promise of our parting Lord,
Jesus, to his heaven restored;

2 Christ, who now gone up on high,
Captive leads captivity,

While his foes from him receive
Grace, that God with man may live.
3 God, the everlasting God,
Makes with mortals his abode;
Whom the heavens cannot contain,
He vouchsafes to dwell in man.

4 Never will he thence depart,
Inmate of a humble heart;

Carrying
on his work within,
Striving till he cast out sin.

5 There he helps our feeble moans, our imperfect groans, Intercedes in silence there,

Deepens

Sighs the unutterable prayer.

6 Come, divine and peaceful Guest, Enter our devoted breast: Holy Ghost, our hearts inspire, Kindle there the gospel fire. 7 Crown the agonizing strife, Principle and Lord of life: Life divine in us renew, Thou the Gift and Giver too!

HOLY

The Source of consolation.

8, 7.

JOLY GHOST, dispel our sadness;
Pierce the clouds of nature's night;
Come, thou Source of joy and gladness,
Breathe thy life, and spread thy light.

2 From the height which knows no measure,
As a gracious shower descend,
Bringing down the richest treasure
Man can wish, or God can send.
3 Author of the new creation,
Come with unction and with power;
Make our hearts thy habitation;
On our souls thy graces shower.
4 Hear, O hear our supplication,
Blessed Spirit, God of peace!
Rest upon this congregation,
With the fullness of thy grace.

Guide and Comforter.

H Ever watchful, ever kind,
Thy celestial aid possessing,

OLY SPIRIT, Fount of blessing,

8, 7.

Prisoned souls deliverance find.
Seal of truth, and Bond of union,
Source of light, and Flame of love,
Symbol of divine communion,

In the olive-bearing dove;

2 Heavenly Guide from paths of error,
Comforter of minds distressed,
When the billows fill with terror,
Pointing to an ark of rest;
Promised Pledge, eternal Spirit,
Greater than all gifts below,
May our hearts thy grace inherit;
May our lips thy glories show!

Thomas J. Judkin.
