1 ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed,
And did my Sovereign die?
Would he devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

2 Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!

3 Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in,

When Christ, the great Creator, died For man, the creature's sin.

4 Thus might I hide my blushing face While his dear cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,

And melt my eyes to tears.

5 But drops of grief can ne'er repay The debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away, "T is all that I can do.

175.

1 BEHOLD the Saviour of mankind, Nailed to the shameful tree!

How vast the love that him inclined

To bleed and die for me!

2 Hark! how he groans, while nature shakes,
And earth's strong pillars bend!
The temple's vail asunder breaks,
The solid marbles rend.

3 'Tis finished! now the ransom's paid,
"Receive my soul !" he cries:
See how he bows his sacred head!
He bows his head and dies!

4 But soon he'll break death's iron chain, And in full glory shine;

O Lamb of God! was ever pain-
Was ever love like thine!

176.

1 OH! if my soul were formed for woe,
How would I vent my sighs!
Repentance should like rivers flow
From both my streaming eyes.

2 'T was for my sins my dearest Lord
Hung on the cursed tree,
And groaned away a dying life

For thee, my soul! for thee.

3 Oh! how I hate these lusts of mine That crucified my Lord;

Those sins that pierced and nailed his flesh

Fast to the fatal wood!

4 Yes, my Redeemer-they shall die;
My heart has so decreed;
Nor will I spare the guilty things
That made my Saviour bleed.

5 While with a melting, broken heart,
My murdered Lord I view,
I'll raise revenge against my sins,
And slay the murderers too.

3 Loose all your bars of massy light,
And wide unfold th' ethereal scene:
He claims these mansions as his right;
Receive the King of glory in.

4 Who is the King of glory-who?

The Lord who all our foes o'ercame;
Who sin, and death, and hell o'erthrew;
And Jesus is the conqueror's name.

5 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits,
And angels chant the solemn lay :-
"Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates!
Ye everlasting doors! give way."
6 Who is the King of glory-who?
The Lord of boundless power possessed;
The King of saints and angels, too,
God over all, forever blessed.

180.

1 THE King of saints,-how fair his face!
Adorned with majesty and grace,
He comes, with blessings from above,
And wins the nations to his love.
2 At his right hand, our eyes behold
The queen, arrayed in purest gold;
The world admires her heavenly dress,
Her robe of joy and righteousness.

13 Oh! happy hour, when thou shalt rise
To his fair palace in the skies;
And all thy sons, a numerous train,
Each, like a prince, in glory reign.

4 Let endless honors crown his head;
Let every age his praises spread;
While we, with cheerful songs, approve
The condescension of his love.

ETERNALGod, celestial King!
Exalted be thy glorious name;

Let hosts in heaven thy praises sing,
And saints on earth thy love proclaim.

2 My heart is fixed on thee, my God!
I rest my hope on thee alone;
I'll spread thy sacred truths abroad,
To all mankind thy love make known.
3 Awake, my tongue! awake, my lyre!
With morning's earliest dawn arise;
To songs of joy my soul inspire,
And swell your music to the skies.
With those who in thy grace abound,
To thee I'll raise my thankful voice;
While every land, the earth around,
Shall hear, and in thy name rejoice.

2 'T was he who cleansed our foulest sins,
And washed us in his precious blood;
'Tis he who makes us priests and kings,
And brings us rebels near to God.

3 To Jesus, our atoning Priest,
To Jesus, our eternal King,
Be everlasting power confessed!
Let every tongue his glory sing.
4 Behold! on flying clouds he comes,
And every eye shall see him move;
Though with our sins we pierced him once,
He now displays his pardoning love.
5 The unbelieving world shall wail,
While we rejoice to see the day;
Come, Lord! nor let thy promise fail,
Nor let thy chariot long delay.

183.

1 COME, let us sing the song of songsThe saints in heaven began the strainThe homage which to Christ belongs: "Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain !" 2 Slain to redeem us by his blood,

To cleanse from every sinful stain, And make us kings and priests to God"Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain !" 3 To him who suffered on the tree, Our souls, at his soul's price, to gain, Blessing, and praise, and glory be: "Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain!"

4 To him, enthroned by filial right, All power in heaven and earth proclaim, Honor, and majesty, and might: "Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain !" 5 Long as we live, and when we die, And while in heaven with him we reign; This song, our song of songs shall be: "Worthy the Lamb, for he was slain ;"

184.

1 BRIGHT King of Glory, dreadful God!
Our spirits bow before thy feet:
To thee we lift an humble thought,
And worship at thine awful seat.

2 A thousand seraphs strong and bright
Stand round the glorious Deity;
But who, among the sons of light,
Pretends comparison with thee?

3 Yet there is One of human frame,
Jesus, arrayed in flesh and blood,
Thinks it no robbery to claim
A full equality with God.

4 Their glory shines with equal beams:
Their essence is forever one,

Though they are known by different names,
The Father God, and God the Son.

5 Then let the name of Christ our King
With equal honors be adored;
His praise let every angel sing
And all the nations own the Lord.

HARWELL. 8s & 78.

DR. L. MASON.

[blocks in formation]

Hark! ten thousand harps and voices Sound the note of praise above;

Jesus reigns, and heaven rejoices; Jesus reigns, the God of love: See, he sits on yonder throne;

Je-sus rules the world alone. Hal-le- lu-jah, hal-le- lu- jah, hal-le- lu- jah, A men.

185.

2 Jesus! hail! whose glory brightens
All above, and gives it worth;
Lord of life thy smile enlightens,
Cheers, and charms thy saints on earth:
When we think of love like thine,
Lord! we own it love divine.

3 King of glory! reign for ever-
Thine an everlasting crown;
Nothing, from thy love, shall sever

Those whom thou hast made thine Happy objects of thy grace, [own ;Destined to behold thy face. 4 Saviour! hasten thine appearing;

Bring-oh, bring the glorious day, When the awful summons hearing,

Heaven and earth shall pass away ;Then, with golden harps, we 'll sing,"Glory, glory to our King."

186.

1 HAIL, thou once despised Jesus! Crowned in mockery a king! Thou didst suffer to release us; Thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, thou agonizing Saviour,

Bearer of our sin and shame! By thy merits we find favor; Life is given through thy name. 2 Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory, There for ever to abide;

All the heavenly host adore thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:
There for sinners thou art pleading;
There thou dost our place prepare:
Ever for us interceding,

Till in glory we appear.

3 Worship, honor, power, and blessing
Thou art worthy to receive;
Loudest praises, without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give.
Help, ye bright angelic spirits;

Bring your sweetest, noblest lays;
Help to sing our Saviour's merits;
Help to chant Immanuel's praise.

187.

1 HAIL, my ever-blessed Jesus!
Only thee I wish to sing;
To my soul thy name is precious,
Thou my Prophet, Priest, and King.
Oh! what mercy flows from heaven!
Oh! what joy and happiness!
Love I much? I'm much forgiven;
I'm a miracle of grace.

2 Once, with Adam's race in ruin,
Unconcerned in sin I lay,
Swift destruction still pursuing,
Till my Saviour passed that way.
Witness, all ye hosts of heaven,
My Redeemer's tenderness;
Love I much? I'm much forgiven;
I'm a miracle of grace.
