PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

The writer of the following pages has no pretensions to literary attainments. Like the greater part of persons of his own class, his parents were poor, and his education was consequently very limited; and what little he now possesses has been obtained by self-application since he arrived at manhood.

Having filled the humble situation of servant for nearly a quarter of a century, during which period he has been in various families, seen many changes, and experienced much of the Lord's goodness, especially in the conversion of his soul to God, he has been induced to offer a few remarks to Domestic Servants, in the hope that, by the blessing of God, they may be made instrumental in leading some one or more of them to "serve the Lord Jesus Christ," and thus promote the Redeemer's kingdom, and their present and eternal happiness.

Manchester,

July 20th, 1853.
