WHY

ISAIAH XL. 27 --- 3!.

I.

HY pour'st thou forth thine anxious Plaint, defpairing of Relief;

As if the LORD o'erlook'd thy Cause,

and did not heed thy Grief?

Haft thou forgot th'Almighty Name that form'd the Earth and Sea?

And can an all-creating Arm

grow weary or decay?

3.

Supreme in Wisdom, as in Pow'r, that Rock of Ages stands :

Tho' him thou can'ft not fee, nor trace the working of his Hands.

He gives the Conqueft to the Weak, fupports the fainting Heart;

And Courage in the evil Hour his ftrength'ning Aids impart.

Mere mortal Pow'r fhall fade and die, and youthful Vigour cease:

But they that wait upon the LORD, shall feel their Strength increafe.

They, with unweary'd Feet, fhall tread the Path of Life divine :

They ftill, with growing Ardor, move; with growing Brightness shine.

7,

On Eagles Wings, they rife, they mount;
their Wings are Faith and Love:
Till, paft the cloudy Regions here,
they met their GOD above.

ISAIAH XLIX. 13: 17.

7E Heav'ns, fend forth your praifing Song ! Earth, raise thy Voice below!

Let Hills and Mountains join the Choir, and Joy thro' Nature flow!

Behold, how gracious is our God! with what comforting Strains

He chears the Sorrows of our Heart, and banishes our Pains!

31

Cease ye, when Days of Darkness fall,
with troubled Hearts to mourn;
As if the LORD could leave a Saint
forfaken or forlorn.

4.

Can a fond Mother e'er forget

the Infant of her Womb?

And, 'mongst a thousand tender Thoughts, her Suckling have no Room?

Yet, faith the LORD, fhould Nature change,

and Mothers Monsters prove; SION ftill dwells upon the Heart of everlasting Love.

6.

Deep on the Palms of both my Hands

I have engrav'd her Name :

My Hands fhall raise her ruin'd Walls, and build her broken Frame,

JOB IX. 2 --- 10.

I.

fhould the Sons of ADAM'S Race be pure before their GOD!

If he contend in Righteousness,

we fall beneath his Rod.

To vindicate my Words and Thoughts,
I'll make no more Pretence :

Not one of all my

throufand Faults

can bear a just Defence.

3.

Strong is his Arm, his Heart is wife;

what vain Prefumers dare

Against their Maker's Hand to rife, or tempt th' unequal War?

4.

Mountains, by his Almighty Wrath, from their old Seats are torn ;

He shakes the Earth from South to North, and all her Pillars mourn.

[ocr errors]

He bids the Sun forbear to rife,

th' obedient Sun forbears:

His Hand with Sackcloth spreads the Skies, and feals up all the Stars.

61

He walks upon the raging Sea, flies on the stormy Wind:

There's none can trace his wond'rous Way or his dark Footsteps find.

LORD, we confefs our num'rous Faults;

how great our Guilt has been!

Foolish and vain were all our Thoughts, and all our Lives were Sin.

2.

But, O my Soul! for ever praise,

for ever love his Name;

Who turns thy Feet from dang'rous Ways of Folly, Sin and Shame.
