5 Arife, my God, falvation caufe, Confound the pride of wretched man, And abrogate those unjust laws, By which they would thy truth reftrain, 6 Eternal Father! thou alone
Canft bring falvation to mankind; Thy bleffing to thy faints is known, They shall thy full falvation find.
The Prayer of Chrift, &c. 1 THUS spake the Saviour of mankind; "When I shall call on thee, my God,
"My Righteousness ! O, may I find "Thy tender mercies spread abroad. "When dangers or distress arife, "Thou only canst a refuge send; "Salvation at thy bidding flies,
" On all my fainting steps to tend. "How long ye fons of Adam's race, "Turn ye my glory into shame ? "Trifles ye love, ye seek disgrace, "And loud your emptiness proclaim. "Jehovah, thou wilt sanctify
"The bountiful, for thine own praise; "Attending to his feebleft cry,
"And from distress to glory raife."
PART II. 8.
Exhortation to Christians, &c.
1 COME ye who bear the Christian name, On your Redeemer meditate, And by obedience, love proclaim, And from his laws ne'er deviate.
2 The facrifice of justice pay, And on Jehovah's ftrength confide; Nor act like them who foolish say, "Where shall we find sweet pleasure's tide ?"
3 Jehovah! cause thy truth to shine, Make it an enfign rais'd by thee; May all behold its light divine, In it thy glorious image fee.
4 Joy to my heart, thou, Lord, hast giv'n, More than when corn, or wine increase, To view the earnest of thy Heav'n, In love, obedience, joy and peace.
5 In softest peace I lay me down,
To fleep or death, my foul refign; If to my heart thou make it known, That I shall dwell with thee and thine.
The Purity and Goodness of God, the Source of the Confidence of them who love him.
HEAR, O my God, my mournful words, Mark the deep fearchings of my heart,
My cry attend, my King! my Lord! From thee, my pray'rs shall not depart.
2 With dawning light, I'll raise my voice, With early morn begin my fong; My boaft thou art, I will rejoice, And pour my grateful ftrains along.
3 The unjust man comes not near thee, My God will not with evil dwell; The proud shall not thy glory fee, But fshall thine indignation feel. 4 Thou hateft mortals idle works, Deceitful words, thou wilt deftroy, Where malice in the fpirit lurks, Or pride, they shall not tafte thy joy.
5 But through the greatness of thy love, Unto thine house I shall repair; There shall I all thy goodness prove, And worship thee with filial fear.
The Goodness and Severity of God.
1 LEAD me, Jehovah, in thy way, May all thy conduct be my guide, Since from the womb I'm apt to stray, Make me in all thy ways abide.
2 A gaping tomb, the wicked are, Loathsome with bones and filth, unclean; Their words are with vile flatt'ry fair, But pride and falsehood dwell within. 3 Guilty they are, and thou wilt place Their artful deeds in dread array; Their fins shall stand before their face, Till felf-condemned, they fink away.
4 But they rejoice who trust in thee, They shall with exultation sing. When they the great Jehovah fee, And find protection 'neath thy wing. 5 For thou wilt bless the justify'd, Thy tend'reft love shall him furround, And like a shield, shall safely hide, And all his haughty foes confound.
PSALM VI. 8 and 6.
Prayer in Distress.
REBUKE me not in anger, Lord,
Nor in thy wrath correct, But pity my weak, helpless state, My God! my life protect.
2 My bones are nearly dry'd away, Whilft I for mercy wait, Set free the current of my blood, Command my pulse to beat.
3 Save me through thine abounding love, Shall death thy trophies bring? Or shall my dust within the tomb, Abounding goodness sing?
4 My fighing wears my flesh away, I swim my bed with tears, Mine eyes with forrow are confum'd, Through griefs, and pains, and fears. 5 Ye worthless boasters, hence, begone, My God beholds my cares, My fupplications deigns to own, And liftens to my pray'rs.
6 Horror and fear, O Lord, shall shake
Thy num'rous enemies, Shame and confufion shall o'ertake All who against thee rise.
The Seed of the Woman shall bruise the Serpent's Head. I THOU only art my refuge, Lord, Cause me falvation from my foes, Jehovah, may thy voice be heard, For, from thy arm salvation flows. Save Lord! least they like lions tear, And I should find no Saviour near.
2 If unjust deeds my heart hath done, Or if oppreffion's spoils I hold, Or gen'rous love, with hatred own; Then let not mercy, peace unfold : No! joyful would I dangers brave, And die, like Christ, my foe to fave.
3 Judgment is thine, O Lord arise ! Indignant 'gainst my Saviour's foe; On Satan let thy vengeance seize, And make the nations thee to know: For they with joy will thee obey, When he is punish'd 'neath thy sway.
4 Reward my Saviour, O, my God, According to his uprightness; Perfect he was, compleat in good, O give his ev'ry wish success. For he creation will reftore, To love and serve thee evermore.
5 Through him the just made firm shall be, For he will try their hearts and reins, And cleanse, till they from fin are free, And love, pure love, alone remains. Jehovah, thee I trust and fing, Because thou dost salvation bring. 6 Thou, Lord, wilt search the justify'd, And try the spring of ev'ry heart; Daily thine anger shall abide, Till ev'ry erring thought depart. Thy fword shall never be return'd, Till fin's forfook as well as mourn'd.
7 Jehovah, thou wilt stretch thy bow, And all death's instruments prepare, And make each perfecutor know Thy pow'r, and thy dread vengeance fear : For worthless things, their hearts conceive, By mischief and deceit, they live.
8 The guileful pit, their hands have dug, Shall their own guilty feet ensnare, And their iniquities return'd,
They on themselves their guilt shall bear: Whilft thy glad faints, thy name confefs, And God, Most High, with fongs they bless.
