children, and widows, and all that are desolate and oppressed; to have mercy on all men; to forgive our enemies, persecutors, slanderers, and to turn their hearts; to give and preserve to our use the kindly fruits of the earth, so that in due time we may enjoy them; to give us true repentance; to forgive us all our sins, negligences, and ignorances; and to endue us with the grace of thy Holy Spirit, to amend our lives according to thy Holy Word;

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

Son of God, we beseech thee to hear us. O Lamb of God! who takest away the sin of the world,

Grant us thy peace.

O Lamb of God! who takest away the sin of the world,

Have mercy on us.

O Christ, hear us. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy

on us.

WE

Amen

TE DEUM LAUDAMUS.

E praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all angels cry aloud; the Heavens, and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim, continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth. Heaven and Earth are full of the Majesty of thy Glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise thee, The noble army of Martyrs praise thee. The Holy Church, throughout all the world, doth acknowledge thee, The Father of an infinite Majesty; thine adorable, true, and only Son; also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glery, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst humble thyself to be born of a virgin. When thou

hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come, to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people, and bless thine heritage. Govern them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee. And we wor ship thy name, ever, world without end. Vouch safe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy on us, have mercy on us. 0. Lord, let thy mercy be on us; as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have we trusted; let us never be confounded. Amen.

[After prayer, the hymn for the conclusion is announc ed, and the service in the pulpit concluded with this sentence. SECTION SECOND.

THE MINISTRATION OF BAPTISM.

The Parents, or Sponsors of the Child, present themselves before the Altar, or baptismal font; and the Minister addresses them as follows:

DEARLY BELOVED,

F

ORASMUCH as all men are conceived and born in sin, and our Saviour Christ saith, None can enter into the kingdom of God, except he be regenerate and born anew of water and of the Holy Ghost: I beseech you to call on God the Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that of his bounteous mercy he will grant to this child that thing which by nature he cannot have; that he being baptised with water and the Holy Ghost, may be received into Christ's holy Church, and made a lively member of the same. And as this child, through you as his sureties, promises to renounce the devil and all his works; to believe on God and faithfully to serve him; you must therefore, remember, that your duty in this respect requires you to look thereunto with all diligencethat this child, as soon as he shall be capable to receive it, may be taught, that he shall have now made, thro' you, a very weighty confession and promise-and that he may be brought to understand and know these things the better, ye must cause him to attend the preaching of God's word, to be instructed in the articles of faith; the Lord's prayer, the ten commandments, the doctrines of the holy sacrament, and every thing which is necessary to salvation either to faith or practice. Also, that this child should be brought up in a virtuous and godly life; remembering that our baptism should constantly remind us of our promise, which consists in following the example of Christ; in dying unto sin, rising in righteousness, and growing daily in virtue and true godliness.

O

Then shall the Minister say, Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call on thee in the behalf of this child, which now, through us, begs thy baptismal blessing: and desires thy heavenly grace through spiritual regeneration. Receive him, O Lord, as thou hast promised in thy word, saying: "Ask, and ye shall receive, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and it shall be opened unto you :" grant thy blessing unto this child, who asks; open the door unto him, seeing he knocks; that he may thereby obtain the blessing of thy heavenly covenant, and receive the promised kingdom of thy grace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us hear the words of the gospel written by St. Mark, in the 10th chapter, from the 13th to the 16th

verse.

"They brought young children unto Christ, that he should touch them. And his disciples rebuked those that brought them; but when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily, I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them."

Following this example, we bless this child-lay our hands upon him, and pray in the following man

ner:

Our Father, &c.

Hereupon the Minister puts the following questions to the Sponsors..

Do you renounce, in the name of this child, the devil and all his works, and all his ways? Yes. Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maFer of heaven and earth? Yes.

Do

you believe in Jesus Christ, his only begotten our Lord; that he was conceived by the Holy

Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried; that he descended into hell; rose again the third day; ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and that from thence he will come again at the end of the world to judge the quick and the dead? Yes.

And, do you also, believe in the Holy Ghost; the Holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the remission of sins; the resurrection of the body; and everlasting life after death? Yes.

Is it your desire, that this child shall be baptized in this faith, and in the foregoing promise? Yes.

66 Baptism is not mere water, but it is that water which the command of God enjoins, and which is connected with his word.”

Then shall the congregation sing the following verse. Thus we engage ourselves to thee,

And seal our cov'nant with the Lord;

O may the great Eternal Three,

In heav'n our solemn vows record!

Name this child.

The Minister, naming the child after them, shall sprinkle or pour water upon him, and say,

N. M. I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Hereupon the congregation sings the following verse. O Holy Ghost with power apply The Saviour's cleansing blood; Own thou this child-and testify, It is a child of God..
