To faint, to grieve, to die for me!
Thou camest not thyself to please;
And dear as earthly comforts be,

Shall I not love Thee more than these?

Yes, I would count them all but loss,
To gain the notice of Thine eye;
Nature may tremble at the cross,

But Thou canst give the victory!

CONDER.

Exertion, vigilance, a mind in arms,
A military discipline of thought,

To foil temptation in the doubtful field;
And ever-waking ardour for the right;

'Tis these first give, then guard, a cheerful heart.

YOUNG.

Take up thy cross; let not its weight
Fill thy weak spirit with alarm,

His strength shall bear thy spirit up,

And brace thy heart, and nerve thy arm.

Take up thy cross then in His strength,
And calmly sin's wild deluge brave;
'Twill guide thee to a better house;
It points to glory o'er the grave.

Take up thy cross and follow me,

Nor think till death to lay it down;

For only he who bears the cross

May hope to wear the glorious crown.

Pilgrim, burden'd with thy sin,

Come the way to Zion's gate;
There, till mercy speaks within,

Knock and weep, and watch and wait.
Knock-He knows the sinner's cry,

Weep He loves the mourner's tears,
Watch for saving grace is nigh,

Wait till heavenly grace appears.

Hark, it is thy Saviour's voice!
"Welcome, pilgrim, to thy rest—”
Now within the gate rejoice,

Safe and owned, and bought and blest.
Safe-from all the lures of vice,

Own'd-by joys the contrite know,
Bought by love, and life the price,
Blest the mighty debt to owe!

Holy pilgrim! what for thee

In a world like this remains?

From thy guarded breast shall flee

Fear and shame, and doubt and pains.

Fear the hope of heaven shall flee,

Shame from glory's view retire,
Doubt-in full belief shall die,

Pain-in endless bliss expire!

СВАВВЕ.

Whate'er its form, whate'er its flow,

While life is lent to man below,

One duty stands confessed,

N

To watch incessant, firm of mind,

And watch where'er the post assigned,

And leave to God the rest.

'Twas while they watched, with lamp in hand, And oil well stored, the virgin band

The bridal pomp descried;

They joined it and the heavenly gate,

That oped to them its glorious state,
Was closed on all beside.

Watch! watch and pray! in suffering hour
Thus He exclaimed who felt its power,
And triumphed in the strife;
Victor of death! Thy voice I hear :

Fain would I watch with holy fear,

Would watch and pray through life's career,

And only cease with life.

Good.

A little while, through grief and care,
Thy servants, Lord, their cross must bear,
Where sorrow seems the heart to clasp
With cold reality's stern grasp;
And faith alone and tremblingly

Through the far distance looks to Thee;
Whilst feeble nature seeks relief,
And drops the tear of human grief ;-
Whilst prayers for patience still are heard,
And still obedient to Thy word,

Each fond request is oft made known
To Thee, whose love we trust alone ;-
Still let this thought our hearts beguile,
It is but for a little while.

Barber.

Oh cast away thy fears,

Hope, and be undismay'd ;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears,
God shall lift up thy head.

Through waves, through clouds and storms,

He gently clears the way ;

Wait thou His time, so shall the night

Soon end in joyful day.

MORAVIAN.

Though the heart that sorrow chideth,
Sink in anguish and in care;

Yet if patience still abideth,

Hope shall paint her rainbow there.

Hope's bright lamp her light shall borrow
From religion's blessed ray,
And from many a coming morrow
Charm the clouds of grief away.

Wherefore should we sigh and languish,
Since our care so soon shall cease,
And the heart that sows in anguish,
Shall hereafter reap in peace.
