This is not a scene of pleasure,
These are not the shores of bliss
We shall gain a brighter treasure,
Find a dearer land than this.

ANON.

Yes, oh my God! I love Thy will!
I will not murmur-but "be still;"
I will not sigh for joys once mine,
Which Thou hast bidden me resign;
My Father's smile, my Saviour's love,
Foretastes by faith of joys above;
These, with the blessed Spirit's peace,
Shall bid each thought regretful cease.

ANON.

Patience, oh, 'tis a grace divine!
Sent from the God of pow'r and love,
That leans upon its Father's hand,
As through the wilderness we move.
By patience we serenely bear
The troubles of our mortal state;
And wait contented our discharge,
Nor think our glory comes too late.

And shall I sit alone,

Oppress'd with grief and fear;
To God my Father, make my moan,
And He refuse to hear?

If He my Father be,

His pity He will shew,

From cruel bondage set me free,
And inward peace bestow.

If still He silence keep,

'Tis but my faith to try;

He knows and feels whene'er I weep,
And softens every sigh.

Then will I humbly wait,

Nor once indulge despair ;
Thy sins are great, but not so great
As His compassions are.

Our strength be His omnipotence;
His truth our sure and sole defence;
His grace can help the feeblest saint
To watch and pray, and never faint:
For He who hath commanded thus,
Oft watched and prayed on earth for us,
And still, with interceding love,
Watches and prays for us above.

XXV. TRUST IN GOD

Oh what a well of comfort springs
From faith to look on earthly things
With calm untroubled eye!

How rich the heart, when it can go,
In every change and chance below,

And say, Thou, Lord, art nigh!

ANON.

Father! forgive the heart that clings,
Thus trembling, to the things of time ;
And bid my soul, on angel wings,
Ascend into a purer clime.

Thy will be done. I will not fear
The fate provided by Thy love;

Though clouds and darkness shroud me here,

I know that all is bright above.

"THOUGHTS OF PEACE."

Be undismay'd; thy God is present here,

Is nigh, is with thee; though through whelming floods,
Through fires, thy path is mark'd, distress'd and tried;
Thy friend omnipotent, thy guardian strength
Accompanies thy steps-is with thee still!
-I trust his promises, I plead them o'er ;
I urge them often on my sinking heart;
I drink into their sweetness deep, and taste
Their nourishment and feel their cordial powers.

BROWN.

Almighty Father of mankind!

On Thee my hopes remain ;
And when the day of trouble comes
I shall not trust in vain.

I know the power in whom I trust,
The arm on which I lean :

He will my Saviour ever be,

Who has my Saviour been.

LOGAN.

Should any earthly things distress me?
Should sufferings, cares, or fears depress me,
When Thou thy love hast given?
When thou wilt leave not, nor forsake me,
But meet for thine own presence make me,
And soon wilt come Thyself and take me
To dwell with Thee in heaven?

Oh, no! with such a God and Saviour,
Sweet peace should stamp my whole behaviour,
Whate'er my present lot ;

Without a care my path pursuing,

My strength by hourly prayer renewing,
Let me, the glorious future viewing,

Go on, and falter not!
