Oh, lovely attitude! He stands
With melting heart and open hands;

Oh, matchless kindness! and He shews
This matchless kindness to His foes!

Rise, touch'd with gratitude divine,
Turn out His enemy and thine ;
Turn out that hateful monster, Sin,
And let the heavenly Stranger in.

Yet know, nor of the terms complain,
Where Jesus comes, He comes to reign,—
To reign with universal sway;

E'en thoughts must die that disobey.

Sovereign of souls! thou Prince of Peace
Oh, may Thy gentle reign increase!
Throw wide the door, each willing mind;
And be His empire-all mankind.

"GEMS OF SACRED POETRY."

Come to Calvary's holy mountain,
Sinners ruin'd by the fall;
Here, a pure and healing fountain
Flows to you to me—to all,
In a full perpetual tide—
Open'd when the Saviour died.

He that drinks shall live for ever :
'Tis a soul-reviving flood:

God is faithful ;—God will never

Break His covenant in bloodSign'd when our Redeemer died— Seal'd when He was glorified.

Now the storm has subsided-now cloudless, serene,
The face of the heav'ns smiles sweetly and bright;
For my God, as my reconcil'd Father, is seen
To own me for His 'midst the children of light!

EAST.

What is the thing of greatest price,

The whole creation round?

That which was lost in Paradise-
That which in Christ was found-

The soul of man-Jehovah's breath,
That keeps two worlds in strife;
Hell moves beneath to work its death,
Heaven stoops to give it life.

And is this treasure borne below
In earthly vessels frail?
Can none its utmost value know,
Till flesh and spirit fail?

God, to redeem it, did not spare
His well-beloved Son;
Jesus, to save it, deigned to bear
The sins of all in one.

The Holy Spirit seal'd the plan,
And pledg'd the blood divine,
To ransom every soul of man-
That price was paid for mine.

MONTGOMERY.

Raise your triumphant songs

To an immortal tune;

Let the wide earth resound the deeds
Celestial grace hath done.

Sing how Eternal Love

His chief Beloved chose,

And bid Him raise our wretched race

From their abyss of woes.

'Twas mercy fill'd the throne,

And wrath stood silent by,

When Christ was sent with pardon down,
To rebels doom'd to die.

Lord, we obey Thy call,

We lay an humble claim

To the salvation Thou hast brought,
And love and praise Thy name!

Not the labour of my hands
Can fulfil Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,—
Could my tears for ever flow,—
All for sin could not atone:

Thou must save, and Thou alone!

TOPLADY.

Where then my boast of immortality?

I boast it still, though cover'd o'er with guilt;
For guilt, not innocence, His life He pour'd;
* * * * *
* * He writes

My name in heaven with that inverted spear

(A spear deep dipt in blood) which pierced His side, And open'd there a fount for all mankind.

And what is this ?-survey the wondrous cure,
And at each step let higher wonder rise!
Pardon for infinite offence! and pardon
Through means that speak its value infinite!
A pardon bought with blood! with blood divine!
With blood divine of Him I made my foe!
Persisted to provoke! though wooed and awed,
Blest and chastised, a flagrant rebel still;
