Thine it is the blood t' apply,
Thine to make us feel and see;
He who did for sinners die,
Hath surely died for me.

God of love and Light of light,
Jesus in us reveal;
Justify us in His sight,

And stamp us with Thy seal.

Fill our souls with joy and peace :
Wisdom, grace, and utterance give;
Make us, through His righteousness,
To life eternal live!

Come, Holy Spirit, calm my mind,
And fit me to approach my God;
Remove each vain, each worldly thought,
And lead me to Thy blest abode.

Hast Thou imparted to my soul
A living spark of holy fire?
O kindle now the sacred flame,
Make me to burn with pure desire.

Impress upon my wandering heart
The love that Christ to sinners bore:
Then mourn the wounds my sin produc'd,
And my redeeming God adore.

A brighter faith and hope impart,
And let me now my Saviour see;

O soothe and cheer my burdened heart,
And bid my spirit rest in Thee.

ANON.

Come, Holy Spirit, come,

Thy gracious influence to the soul impart,
Thou that hast sent Thy winged arrows home
Unto the sinner's heart,

The deadly serpent waiting there to slay,
Come and support him on his pilgrim way.

Come with Thy heavenly fire,
And wither all the clinging bands of sin :
Kindle within His soul the high desire,
The victor crown to win!

Come in Thy wisdom with a gentler light,
And be a star unto his darkest night.

Come like the viewless wind,
Breathing a vital spirit through his clay,
Leaving a freshness and a joy behind,
Sweeping earth's chaff away.

Come like a dove, the olive branch to bear
From a serener clime and purer air!

Come as the gracious dew,

And quicken in his heart the holy seed
God's blessed Word hath sown there, pure and true,
It doth Thine influence need;

Prepare the soil, and fix the infant root,

Hasten the leaf and flower, mature the fruit.

Come as the Comforter,

Come when our hearts are sad and bowed with woe, From Thy full urn the precious gifts confer

Upon the church below!

Pour out the treasures of Thy healing balm,
Her patient faith to help, her grief to calm.

66

Come, blessed Spirit, come!

Come, and the great Deliverer's words fulfil,
Though I am summoned to my Father's home,
There shall be with you still

Another Comforter!" Oh, still go forth,
God's witness to His witnesses on earth!

M. A. BROWNE.

Milder than moonlight on the evening dew,
Clearer than sunshine streaming tempests through,

The Spirit's holy flame,

To cheer the sorrows of the weary mind,

To pierce the dimness of the inly blind.

Even in these dreary days,

In many a heart that Spirit's altar stands,

Where the deep voice of fervent prayer and praise

The soul within its temple loves to raise,

The

house not made with hands;

And through the Christian's heart, and words, and ways, That Holy Spirit sends its gladdening rays.

But see! a light divides the gloom,
I hear a soothing voice:
Behold thy God!-thy bliss-thy home!
I am the way! Rejoice!

Thy Saviour thy unchanging Friend,
Shall teach and guide thee to the end.
