For who, that once Thy voice has heard,
Thy perfect beauty seen,
Can list to Error's syren word,
Or love her guileful mein?
Oh! never, never let me stray,
From Thy safe guidance wil'd away,
Till Thou shalt all Thy form display,
In glory's brighter scene.

When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My weary eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast!

Thy wisdom guides, Thy will directs,
Thy arm upholds, Thy power protects ;
With Thee, when I at dawn converse,
The shadows sink, the clouds disperse.

Then, as the sun illumes the skies,
Oh, Sun of Righteousness, arise;
Dispel the fogs of mental night,
Being of beings, Light of light!

EVENING HYMN.

Hark! 'tis the breeeze of twilight calling
Earth's weary children to repose;
While, round the couch of Nature, falling,
Gently, the night's soft curtains close.

Soon o'er a world, in sleep reclining,
Numberless stars, through yonder dark,
Shall look, like eyes of cherubs shining
From out the veils that hide the Ark.

Guard us, oh Thou, who never sleepest,
Thou who, in silence throned above,
Throughout all time, unwearied, keepest
Thy watch of Glory, Pow'r, and Love.
Grant that, beneath Thine eye, securely,
Our souls, awhile from life withdrawn,
May, in their darkness, stilly, purely,
Like "sealed fountains," rest till dawn!

MOORE.

The Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His
presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye :
My noon-day walks He will attend
And all my midnight hours defend.

When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary, wandering steps He leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious, lonely wilds I stray
Thy presence shall my pains beguile;
The barren wilderness shall smile,

With sudden green and herbage crown'd,
And streams shall murmur all around.

Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread ;
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For Thou, O Lord, art with me still :
Thy friendly hand shall give me aid,

And guide me through the dreadful shade.

ADDISON.

Lighten our darkness, Lord; our eyes are veiled, Our faith is weak, our hearts with sorrow bowed; We totter on, by many a fear assailed,

And ignorance is round us like a cloud

Within that cloud be Thine the pillar bright,
Send some clear star to cheer our heavy night!

Lighten our darkness! be Thy. Holy Writ

A lamp to cheer our way and guide our feet ; A glorious torch, by Thine own Spirit lit, Shewing the Rock wherein is our retreat; Casting around so pure, so clear a day,

That Falsehood veils her eyes, and flees away.

Lighten our darkness, we beseech Thee, Lord,
When in the shadow of the vale of death;
Be with us then-with promise from Thy Word,
And comfort from Thy Spirit, feed our faith,
And from the opening heaven send forward light,
To make the passage to Thy presence bright.

XIII. THE GRACE OF GOD.

By grace ye are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.-EPH. ii. 8.

Unto every one is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.-EPH. iv. 7.

How shall I follow Him I serve?
How shall I copy Him I love?
Nor from those blessed footsteps swerve,
Which lead me to His seat above?

Thou who for Peter's faith didst pray,
Against whose blessed self were hurl'd
The tempter's dart-be Thou my stay,
Help me to overcome the world!

Thy grace can make the boastful meek,
The wav'ring firm, the sinful pure;

Put heav'nly might upon the weak,
And make those happy who endure.

Forbid it, Lord, that we

Who from Thy hand receive
The Spirit's power to make us free,
Should e'er that Spirit grieve.

O keep our faith alive,

Help us to watch and pray ;
Lest by our carelessness we drive

The sacred Guest away.

How can we bear to lose

Our best and kindest Friend,
Life, health, and happiness refuse,
And joys that never end!

Conder.
