Lord, make us wholly Thine;
And in our hearts of stone
Let grace with purer lustre shine,
To mark us for Thine own.

Ah! where can that Treasure be found,
That gem so transcendant in worth!
Not in folly's tumultuous round,
Nor the glitt'ring assemblies of mirth.

Far, far from commotion and strife,
Amid pastures sequester'd and green,
Beneath the pure Waters of Life
Sleeps the Pearl in its beauty serene.

A ray must descend from above,
Ere its hidden retreat can be known-
One beam from the Saviour of Love
Will disclose it and make it our own!

CUNNINGHAM.

Heirs of unending life,
While yet we sojourn here,
O let us our salvation work,
With trembling and with fear!

God will support our hearts
With might before unknown:
The work to be perform'd is our's,
The strength is His alone.

Like morning, when her early breeze
Breaks up the surface of the seas,
That, in those furrows dark with night,
Her hand may sow the seeds of light-

Thy grace can send its breathings o'er
The Spirit, dark and lost before;
And, fresh'ning all its depths, prepare
For Truth divine to enter there.

Till David touch'd his sacred lyre,
In silence lay th' unbreathing wire;
But when he swept the chords along,
Ev'n angels stoop'd to hear that song.

So sleeps the soul, till Thou, O Lord,
Shall deign to touch its lifeless chord--
Till, wak'd by Thee, its breath shall rise
In music, worthy of the skies!

Oh, had I not that story

No mortal pen could write,

Till by the Eternal Spirit

'Twas dipp'd in living light,—

Moore.

Could fancy's wildest dream have feign'd

Such love could ever be,

Such unimaginable grace,

That Christ would die for me!

The Light into the world is come,
And darts into our nature's gloom

The first divine enlivening ray!
Happy who in the Light believes,
And with that glimmering ray receives
The promise of eternal day.

ANON.

He shall not long in sin abide;

The Light will bring him forth, and guide
His feet into the way of peace,
With still increasing lustre shine,
And fill his soul with love divine,

With all the life of heavenly grace.

WESLEY.

Light beams upon my inward eye,

New thoughts awake, new things I see; Is this "the Day-spring from on high," Shining on me?

The God of love my soul has met ;
He gently draws me from above,
And though I do not love Him yet,
I long to love.

My soul, once dead, begins to move,
Roused by a Hand divine from sleep,
My heart, once cold, begins to love,
My eye to weep.

Lord, while this heavenly light is shed,

Which while I gaze, seems still t' increase, Will not my wandering steps be led

To paths of peace?

Light of the world! Thou, Thou hast shone,
With life and healing in Thy ray;
Now clear my path, and lead me on
To realms of day.
