• This is a true saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, whereof I am chief.' O most sweet and comfortable sentence to my soul! This one sentence, through God's instruction and inward working, did so exbilarate my heart, which before was wounded with the guilt of my sins,..... that immediately I found comfort and quietness in my soul, so that my bruised bones leaped for joy.” “ You are now,” said Oxensteirn, the celebrated statesman of Sweden, to one of our own countrymen—"you are now in the prime of your age and vigour, and in great favour and business ; but all these will leave you, and you will one day better understand and relish what I say ; and then you will find that there is more wisdom, truth, comfort, and pleasure in retiring and turning your heart from the world to the good Spirit of God, and in the reading of the Bible, than in all courts and favours of princes." Yes ;-our blessed Lord will not fail us ;-He will be with us, by His Word and by His Spirit, in every state and under all circumstances of life ;—will be our Guide even unto death ;--and after death, receive us unto Himself, to dwell with Him for ever in those heavenly

mansions prepared from the foundation of the world for those who love Him.

H. D. April, 1843.

Lord, my first fruits present themselves to Thee;
Yet not mine neither; for from Thee they came,
And must return. Accept of them and me,
And make us strive, who shall sing best Thy praise.

Turn their eyes hither, who shall make a gain;
Theirs, who shall hurt themselves or me, refrain.

HERBERT.

A bleeding Saviour, seen by faith . .
A cloud lay cradled near the setting sun .
A dying risen Jesus . .
A little while, through grief and care
A mother's love! go ask the buds that live .
A mother's love-how sweet the name
A sigh can waft them to His seat in prayer.
A soul in commerce with her God is heaven
A sweet but solitary beam .
A wreath of glory circles still His head
Abash'd be all the boast of Age .
Ah ! give me, Lord, the tender heart
Ah! sweet and sacred Olivet .
Ah! where can that Treasure be found
Ah! why should this immortal mind
All nature is society. ..
Almighty Father of mankind.
And does the Lord require my prayer
And dost Thou say, Ask what thou wilt .
And hast thou then His love forgot.
And have the ocean-waves no voice .
And in her other hand she fast did hold .
And is there care in heaven, and is there love
And my sweet sisters, with their calm bright eyes .
And shall a sinful worm complain . .
And shall I sit alone. . .
And there he stood in bonds. But when he spoke
And thou, my soul, which turn'st with curious gaze
Arise, O Sun of Righteousness, and shine .
Art thou a sinner, soul, He said .
Art Thou our Father, we confess.
As every day Thy mercy spares ,
