In committing this work to the Church at large, the Compiler would be glad to find his labours acceptable, and, in that case, he may possibly some day issue a companion volume from the devotional stores of the Western Church. It is from no want of appreciation that A'Kempis and Bernard, Fenelon and Horst, to name no others, are not represented in this book, but from the feeling that the Fathers of the English Church had a prior claim on the affections of their nineteenth century descendants. Books of Meditation are now so numerous, that it was not thought necessary to include Meditations in the scope of this Volume. It was strongly felt, that in the Family Prayers flexibility and brevity were the two points to be aimed at. It will be noticed, at once, that no eucharistic devotions occur in this book, the reason being that ample provision has recently been made for them by the Compiler of "The Churchman's Altar Manual," recently issued by the same publishers as the present work, and therefore the two books may together form a storehouse of English Church devotions sufficient for the needs of ordinary Christians. The warm thanks of the Compiler are due to the Rev. G. Morris, and to Mr. E. K. Hanscomb, for valuable advice, aid, and suggestions; as also to Mr. C. P. Tresilian for much labour in the preparation of this little book. Any hints as to improvements, omissions, or corrections, will be cordially welcomed and carefully considered by 157, RICHMOND ROAD, HACKNEY, E. WILL. T. BROOKE. CONTENTS. PREFATORY MATTER.
