Cultivation and Sterility. Our bodies are our gardens; to the which, our wills are gardeners : so that if we will plant nettles, or sow lettuce; set hyssop, and weed up thyme; supply it with one gender of herbs, or distract it with many ; either to have it sterile with idleness, or manured with industry; why, the power and corrigible authority of this lies in our wills. If the balance of our lives had not one scale of reason to poise another of sensuality, the blood and baseness of our natures would conduct us to most preposterous conclusions.

Precept and Example. If to do were as easy as to know what were good to do, chapels had been churches, and poor men's cottages, princes’ palaces. It is a good divine that follows his own instructions: I can easier teach twenty what were good to be done, than be one of the twenty to follow mine own teaching. * The brain may devise laws, for the blood; but a hot temper leaps over a cold decree ; such a hare is madness the youth, to skip over the meshes of good counsel the cripple.

Promising is the very air o' the time: it opens the eyes of expectation : performance is ever the duller for his act; and, but in the plainer and simpler kind of people, the deed of saying is quite out of use.
