3 I want a godly fear,

A quick discerning eye,

That looks to thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly:
A spirit still prepared,

And arm'd with jealous care;
Forever standing on its guard,
And watching unto prayer.

577

For perfect submission.

WANT a heart to pray,

I WANT a to prays

pray, and never cease;

Never to murmur at thy stay,

Or wish my suff'rings less. This blessing, above all,

Always to pray,—I want; Out of the deep on thee to call, And never, never faint.

S. M.

2 I want a true regard,
A single, steady aim,-
Unmoved by threat'ning or reward,
To thee and thy great name;
A jealous, just concern,

For thine immortal praise;
A pure desire that all may learn
And glorify thy grace.

3 I rest upon thy word,-
The promise is for me;

My succour and salvation, Lord,
Shall surely come from thee:

But let me still abide,

Nor from my hope remove, Till thou my patient spirit guide Into thy perfect love.

578

For sustaining grace.

L. M.

Mbole, I, now my soul I bow;

hope, my all, my Saviour thou;
To thee, lo, now

I feel the bliss thy wounds impart,-
I find thee, Saviour, in my heart.

2 Be thou my strength, be thou my way;
Protect me through my life's short day:
In all my acts may wisdom guide,
And keep me, Saviour, near thy side.
3 In fierce temptation's darkest hour,
Save me from sin and Satan's power;
Tear every idol from thy throne,
And reign, my Saviour, reign alone.
4 My suff'ring time shall soon be o'er;
Then shall I sigh and weep no more:
My ransom'd soul shall soar away,
To sing thy praise in endless day.

579

I

For a tender conscience.

WANT a principle within,
Of jealous, godly fear;

A sensibility of sin,

A pain to feel it near:

I want the first approach to feel,
Of pride, or fond desire;
To catch the wand'ring of my will,
And quench the kindling fire.

C. M.

2 From thee that I no more may part,
No more thy goodness grieve,
The filial awe, the fleshly heart,
The tender conscience, give.
Quick as the apple of an eye,
O God, my conscience make;
Awake my soul when sin is nigh,
And keep it still awake.

3 If to the right or left I stray,
That moment, Lord, reprove;
And let me weep my life away,
For having grieved thy love.
O may the least omission pain
My well-instructed soul,

And drive me to the blood again,
Which makes the wounded whole.

B

For watchfulness and circumspection.

me of men beware,

And to my ways take heed; Discern their every secret snare, And circumspectly tread.

20 may I calmly wait

Thy succours from above;

And stand against their open hate,
And well-dissembled love.

3 My spirit, Lord, alarm,

S. M.

When men and devils join: 'Gainst all the powers of Satan arm, In panoply divine.

4 0 may I set my face, His onsets to repel;

Quench all his fiery darts, and chase

The fiend to his own hell,

5 But, above all, afraid

Of my own bosom foe,

Still let me seek to thee for aid,-
To thee my weakness show:

6 Hang on thy arm alone,
With self-distrusting care,
And deeply in the Spirit groan
The never-ceasing prayer.

19th P. M. 664, 6664.

For the Saviour's guidance.

Y faith looks up to thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary :
Saviour divine,

Now hear me while I pray;
Take all my guilt away;
O let me, from this day,
Be wholly thine.

2 May thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart;
My zeal inspire;

As thou hast died for me,
O may my love to thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be-
A living fire.

3 While life's dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day;
Wipe sorrow's tears away,
Nor let me ever stray

From thee aside.

4 When ends life's transient dream;
When death's cold, sullen stream
Shall o'er me roll;

Blest Saviour, then, in love,
Fear and distress remove;

O, bear me safe above,

A ransom'd soul.

5th P. M. 4 lines 7s.

For humility and protection.

YOD of Love, who hearest prayer,

G Kindly for thy people care,

Who on thee alone depend:
Love us, save us to the end.

2 Save us, in the prosp'rous hour,
From the flatt'ring tempter's power;
From his unsuspected wiles,-
From the world's pernicious smiles.
3 Save us from the great and wise,
Till they sink in their own eyes,
Tamely to thy yoke submit,
Lay their honour at thy feet.

4 Never let the world break in;
Fix a mighty gulf between;
Keep us little and unknown,
Prized and loved by God alone.

5 Let us still to thee look up,-
Thee, thy Israel's strength and hope;
Nothing know, or seek, beside
Jesus, and him crucified.

JE

For lowliness and purity.

L. M.

ESUS, in whom the Godhead's rays
Beam forth with mildest majesty;

I see thee full of truth and grace,

And come for all I want to thee.

2 Save me from pride, the plague expel; Jesus, thine humble self impart :

O let thy mind within me dwell;
O give me lowliness of heart.

3 Enter thyself, and cast out sin;
Thy spotless purity bestow:
Touch me, and make the leper clean;
Wash me, and I am white as snow.
4 Sprinkle me, Saviour, with thy blood,
And all thy gentleness is mine;
And plunge me in the purple flood,
Till all I am is lost in thine.
