4 Patient the' appointed race to run,
This weary world we cast behind;
From strength to strength we travel on,
The New Jerusalem to find:
Our labour this, our only aim,

To find the New Jerusalem.

5 Through thee, who all our sins hast borne,
Freely and graciously forgiven,
With songs to Zion we return,
Contending for our native heaven;
That palace of our glorious King,—
We find it nearer while we sing.

6 Raised by the breath of love divine,
We urge our way, with strength renew'd;
The church of the first-born to join,

We travel to the mount of God:

With joy upon our heads arise,
And meet our Saviour in the skies.

5th P. M. 4 lines 7s.

The pilgrim's song.

HILDREN of the heavenly King,

CHI

CAs we journey let us sing;

Sing our Saviour's worthy praise,
Glorious in his works and ways.
2 We are trav❜ling home to God,
In the way our fathers trod;
They are happy now, and we
Soon their happiness shall see.
30 ye banish'd seed, be glad;
Christ our Advocate is made:
Us to save our flesh assumes,—
Brother to our souls becomes.

4 Fear not, brethren, joyful stand
On the borders of our land;
Jesus Christ, our Father's Son,
Bids us undismay'd go on.

5 Lord! obediently we'll go,
Gladly leaving all below:
Only thou our leader be,

And we still will follow thee.

God's pavilion.

C. M.

YRANT me within thy courts a place,

G a

Among thy saints a seat,

Forever to behold thy face,
And worship at thy feet:-
2 In thy pavilion to abide,
When storms of trouble blow,
And in thy tabernacle hide,
Secure from every foe.

3 Seek ye my face;—without delay,
When thus I hear thee speak,
My heart would leap for joy, and say,--
Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

4 Then leave me not when griefs assail,
And earthly comforts flee;

When father, mother, kindred fail,
My God! remember me.

Your life is hid with Christ in God.

YE faithful souls, who Jesus know,

If risen indeed with him ye are, Superior to the joys below,

L. M.

His resurrection's power declare. 2 Your faith by holy tempers prove: By actions show your sins forgiven : And seek the glorious things above, And follow Christ your head to heaven. 3 There your exalted Saviour see, Seated at God's right hand again,

In all his Father's majesty,

In everlasting pomp to reign.

4 To him continually aspire, Contending for your native place; And emulate the angel choir,

And only live to love and praise. 5 For who by faith your Lord receive, Ye nothing seek or want beside; Dead to the world and sin ye live; Your creature-love is crucified.

;

6 Your real life, with Christ conceal'd,
Deep in the Father's bosom lies
And glorious as your Head reveal'd,
Ye soon shall meet him in the skies.

Now we see through a glass, darkly.

T Thy paths we cannot trace;

HY way is in the sea;

Nor solve, O Lord, the mystery
Of thy unbounded grace.

S. M.

2 Here the dark veils of sense
Our captive souls surround;
Mysterious deeps of providence
Our wond'ring thoughts confound.

3 As through a glass we see
The wonders of thy love;
How little do we know of thee,
Or of the joys above!

4 In part we know thy will,

And bless thee for the sight:
Soon will thy love the rest reveal
In glory's clearer light.

5 With joy shall we survey
Thy providence and grace;
And spend an everlasting day
In wonder, love, and praise.

Walk in the light.

C. M.

W That fellowship of love,

ALK in the light! so shalt thou know

His Spirit only can bestow

Who reigns in light above.

2 Walk in the light! and thou shalt find Thy heart made truly His

Who dwells in cloudless light enshrined,
In whom no darkness is.

3 Walk in the light! and thou shalt own Thy darkness pass'd away,

Because that Light hath on thee shone
In which is perfect day.

4 Walk in the light! and e'en the tomb
No fearful shade shall wear;

Glory shall chase away its gloom,

For Christ hath conquer'd there.

5 Walk in the light! thy path shall be
Peaceful, serene, and bright:

For God, by grace, shall dwell in thee,
And God himself is light.

843

Meekness.

L. M.

HA

APPY the meek, whose gentle breast,
Clear as the summer's evening ray,

Calm as the regions of the blest,

Enjoys on earth celestial day.

2 His heart no broken friendships sting;
No jars his peaceful tent invade;
He rests beneath the' Almighty's wing,
Hostile to none-of none afraid.

3 Spirit of grace! all meek and mild,
Inspire our hearts, our souls possess
Repel each passion rude and wild,
And bless us, as we aim to bless.

844

Charity, or Love.

AD I the gift of tongues,

S. M.

H Great God, without thy grace,

My loudest words, my loftiest songs,
Would be but sounding brass.
2 Though thou shouldst give me skill
Each myst'ry to explain;
Without a heart to do thy will,
My knowledge would be vain.
3 Had I such faith in God,
As mountains to remove,
No faith could work effectual good,
That did not work by love.

4 Grant, then, this one request,-
Whatever be denied,-

That love divine may rule my breast,
And all my actions guide.

845

Gratitude.

C. M.

WH

HEN all thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost

In wonder, love, and praise.

20 how can words with equal warmth The gratitude declare,

That glows within my ravish'd heart?— But thou canst read it there.

3 To all my weak complaints and cries, Thy mercy lent an ear,

Ere yet my feeble thoughts had learn'd To form themselves in prayer.

4 When in the slipp'ry paths of youth, With heedless steps, I ran;

Thine arm, unseen, convey'd me safe,
And led me up to man.
