in a manner with which Mary was familiar, convinced her at once who he was-for what, turning towards him, did she instantly reply? What is the meaning of Rabboni?

17 In her joy, Mary would feel inclined to embrace Jesus-but what does Jesus desire? Why did Jesus desire her not to touch him? And he directed her to go to the disciples and what message was she to take?

18 In obedience to his directions, what did Mary do?

19 What day of the week was this? In the evening of this day, the disciples were met togetherand what is noticed, respecting their place of meeting? Why were the doors shut? And here, though the doors were shut, Jesus came to them-how did he address them?

20 And to convince them who he was, what did Jesus do? Then how did the disciples feel?

21 Then again, what blessing did Jesus pronounce upon them? And what did he say, respecting their future ministry?

22 And when Jesus had said this, what did he do and say?

23 And with what authority did Jesus invest his apostles?

24 Which of the disciples was absent on this occasion?

25 When the other disciples saw Thomas, what did they tell him? But what did Thomas say, in reply?

26 Some days after, the disciples

met again-and who, on this occasion, is stated to be present? The doors were shut at this time also-yet who came and joined the little company? And how did he salute them?

27 And what did Jesus desire Thomas to do? And what exhortation did Jesus give Thomas, as to the state of his mind?

28 And Thomas was at once convinced-what did he say?

29 Nor does Jesus object to be so addressed-what did he remind Thomas was the occasion of his belief? And this was intended perhaps to convey a reproof, for not having believed on the evidence of his fellow-disciples but what does Jesus say of those who believe without the evidence of their senses?

30 These must have been very interesting meetings, even if nothing had passed but what is here related but what are we told, in the 30th verse?

31 To produce what principle were those things written which are written? And to insure what ultimate blessing?

CHAP. XXI.

1 AFTER having occasionally appeared to the disciples, since his resurrection-where do we read, in this chapter, that Jesus appeared to them?

2 And who were present at this

interview? What were the names of the sons of Zebedee?

3 What did Peter propose to do? And what did the others say? And they immediately went-but what success had they?

4 When morning came, whom did the disciples see ashore? Yet of what were they ignorant?

5 And Jesus addressed themwhat did he inquire? And what answer did they make? 6 Then what did Jesus direct the disciples to do? And of what did he assure them? They did as he recommended-with what success?

7 Of what did this convince John? To whom did John communicate his opinion? When Peter heard that, what did he do?

8 And swam ashore-how did the other disciples go ashore? How far were they from shore? Or, about a hundred yards, a cubit being rather more than half a yard what did the disciples bring ashore with them?

9 On reaching the land, what did they find already prepared?

10 Yet what did Jesus desire them to do?

11 Then Peter went and assisted them-how many fishes were there in the net? Yet, contrary to reasonable expectation, what was not done?

12 Having secured the net and its contents, what did Jesus invite

the disciples to do? And what did they not venture to ask Jesus? Why?

13 But, uniting with them in the most friendly manner, what did Jesus do?

14 And what does John observe, concerning this interview between Jesus and his disciples?

15-17 After dinner, what question did Jesus ask Peter? Why did Jesus ask this question? ANS. Because on a former occasion, Peter had boasted "Though all men forsake thee yet will not I." How many times did Jesus inquire of Peter if he loved him? How did Peter feel when the question was asked the third time? And why? ANS. Because the repetition of the question seemed to imply doubt in the mind of Jesus: perhaps also because the third time reminded him of his having three times denied his Lord. What answer did Peter return to these questions? In answering the question the third time, what, separate from the immediate subject of inquiry, did Peter say Jesus knew? Peter having declared his attachment to Jesus, Jesus reinstated him in his office-what directions did he give him? Peter afterwards gave a similar charge to Christian ministers in general(1 Peter v. 2, 3.)-Read the passage.

18 In the 18th verse, what did Jesus remind Peter he had done?

But what would he be compelled to do when he was old?

19 To what, in this language, did Jesus refer? By what death who should glorify God? Then what did Jesus say?

23 In consequence of what Jesus said about John, what saying was commonly reported? But there was no authority for such a report

why not? What should this teach us? ANs. To be careful, in circulating reports, to repeat the

20 Then Peter turned and saw another disciple following Jesus-words which were used, rather than

how is that disciple described? And what was his name?

21 Seeing John, what did Peter inquire of Jesus?

22 This was a feeling of curiosity which Jesus would not gratify -therefore what did he say, in reply? And he reminded Peter of his own duty-what was it? And what should we learn from this? ANS. Not to indulge in curious ·inquiries about other people, but to mind our own duty.

our own ideas of the meaning.

24 In the 24th verse, what does John say of himself? And what is said of his testimony?

25 Did John narrate every thing concerning Jesus? If every thing concerning Jesus were written, what did John suppose? And ANS. That what does this mean? they are more wonderful and spiritual, than, with their present capacities and dispositions, mankind could receive.
