Habitual Devotion.

MRS. WILLIAMS.

1 WHILE thee I seek, protecting Power,
Be my vain wishes stilled;
And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled.

2 Thy love the power of thought bestowed;
To thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed;
That mercy I adore.

3 In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

Each blessing to my soul more dear,
Because conferred by thee.

4 In every joy that crowns my days,
In every pain I bear,

My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in prayer.

5 When gladness wings my favored hour,
Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower,
My soul shall meet thy will.

6 My lifted eye, without a tear,

18.

The gathering storm shall see;

My steadfast heart shall know no fear;
That heart shall rest on thee.

Longing for the House of God.

1 EARLY, my God, without delay,
I haste to seek thy face;
My thirsty spirit faints away
Without thy cheering grace.

2 So pilgrims, on the scorching sand,
Beneath a burning sky,

Long for a cooling stream at hand;
And they must drink, or die.

3 I've seen thy glory, and thy power,
Through all thy temple shine;
My God, repeat that heavenly hour,
That vision so divine.

4 Not all the blessings of a feast
Can please my soul so well,
As when thy richer grace I taste,
And in thy presence dwell.

5 Not life itself, with all its joys,
Can my best passions move,
Or raise so high my cheerful voice,
As thy forgiving love.

6 Thus, till my last, expiring day,
I'll bless my God and King;
Thus will I lift my hands to pray,
And tune my lips to sing.

Elements of acceptable Worship.

J. TAYLOR.

1 FATHER of our feeble race,
Wise, beneficent, and kind,
Spread o'er nature's ample face,
Flows thy goodness unconfined:
Musing in the silent grove,

Or the busy walks of men,
Still we trace thy wondrous love,
Claiming large returns again.

2 Lord, what offerings shall we bring,
At thine altars when we bow?
Hearts, the pure, unsullied spring,
Whence the kind affections flow;
Soft compassion's feeling soul,

By the melting eye expressed;
Sympathy, at whose control

Sorrow leaves the wounded breast;·

3 Willing hands to lead the blind,
Heal the wounded, feed the poor;
Love, embracing all our kind;
Charity, with liberal store:
Teach us, O thou heavenly King,
Thus to show our grateful mind,
Thus th' accepted offering bring,
Love to thee and all mankind.

Joy of public Worship.

1 GREAT God, attend, while Zion sings
The joy that from thy presence springs:
To spend one day with thee on earth
Exceeds a thousand days of mirth.
2 Might I enjoy the meanest place
Within thy house, O God of grace,
Not tents of ease, nor thrones of power,
Should tempt my feet to leave thy door.
3 God is our sun he makes our day;
God is our shield—he guards our way
From all th' assaults of hell and sin;
From foes without and foes within.
4 All needful grace will God bestow,
And crown that grace with glory too:
He gives us all things, and withholds
No real good from upright souls.

WATTS.

5 O God, our King, whose sovereign sway
The glorious host of heaven obey,
Display thy grace, exert thy power,
Till all on earth thy name adore.

Prayer for Sincerity.

SACRED POETRY.

1 LORD, when we bow before thy throne,
And our confessions pour,

O, may we feel the sins we own,
And hate what we deplore.

2 Our contrite spirits, pitying, see;
True penitence impart;

And let a healing ray from thee
Beam hope on every heart.

3 When we disclose our wants in prayer,
O, let our wills resign,

And not a thought our bosom share
Which is not wholly thine.

4 Let faith each meek petition fill,

And waft it to the skies,

And teach our hearts 'tis goodness, still,
That grants it, or denies.

STEELE.

The Presence of God sought in his House.

1 COME, O thou King of all thy saints,
Our humble tribute own,

While, with our praises and complaints,
We bow before thy throne.

2 How should our songs, like those above,
With warm devotion rise!

How should our souls, on wings of love,
Mount upward to the skies!

3 But, ah, the song, how faint it flows!
How languid our desire!

How dim the sacred passion glows
Till thou the heart inspire!

4 Dear Saviour, let thy glory shine,
And fill thy dwellings here,
Till life, and love, and joy divine,
A heaven on earth appear.

Spiritual Improvement.

1 IN thy name, O Lord, assembling,
We, thy people, now draw near;
Teach us to rejoice with trembling;
Speak, and let thy servants hear, -
Hear with meekness,-

Hear thy word with godly fear.

KELLY.

2 While our days on earth are lengthened,
May we give them, Lord, to thee;
Cheered by hope, and daily strengthened,
We would run, nor weary be,

Till thy glory,

Without clouds, in heaven we see.

3 There, in worship purer, sweeter, All thy people shall adore, Tasting of enjoyment greater

Than they could conceive before, —
Full enjoyment,

Holy bliss, forevermore.

MONTGOMERY.

Invocation for a Blessing in Worship.
1 LORD, teach thy servants how to pray
With reverence and with fear:
Though dust and ashes, yet we may,
We must, to thee draw near.

2 We come, then, God of grace, to thee;
Give broken, contrite hearts;

Give

- what thine eye delights to see — Truth in the inward parts.

3 Give deep humility; the sense
Of godly sorrow give;

A strong, desiring confidence
To see thy face and live.

4 Give faith in that one sacrifice
Which can for sin atone;

To cast our hopes, to fix our eyes,
On Christ, and Christ alone.

5 Give patience, still to wait and weep,
Though mercy long delay;
Courage, our fainting souls to keep,
And trust thee, though thou slay.

6 Give these, and then thy will be done :
Thus strengthened with all might,
We, through thy Spirit and thy Son,
Shall pray, and pray aright.

A Blessing humbly requested.

NEWTON.

1 LORD, we come before thee now;
At thy feet we humbly bow;

O, do not our suit disdain;

Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?
2 Lord, on thee our souls depend;
In compassion now descend;
Fill our hearts with thy rich grace;
Tune our lips to sing thy praise.
3 In thine own appointed way,
Now we seek thee; here we stay;
Lord, from hence we would not go,
Till a blessing thou bestow.
