EDNYFED FYCHAN,LORD of BRYN FFFNIGL, held great power & authority in Wales,in the former part of the XIIth century. He was chief Counsellor & Minifter to LLEWELYN the GREAT,& leader of his Armies against the SAXONS. He ufually fought with great fuccefs,& bringing back from one of his battles the heads of three Saxon Generals whom he had flain with his own hands,was rewarded by that Prince with a new coat of Arms, LES, CHEVRON between three SAXONS HEADS, proper,couped. Of him defcended OWEN TUDOR,of Penmynydd,in the Ifle of Anglefey, who married QUFFN CATHARINE, Wife of HENRY V

It is a general tradition in CAERNARVONSHIRE, that a Bard of this name lying on his death bed, called for his Harp, and performed this plaintive Tune, which he defired fhould be repeated at his Funeral. ever since it has been called by his name and that of CARREG-WEN,the houfe where he lived in that county,which ftill remains. whether it was of higher antiquity, or was originally conceived by the dying Bard, is uncertain.

The verfes, formerly fung to this fragment of Hwby Dyrif, were of the Lampoon caft, and often peformed with great humour, alternate; fomewhat in the manner of the Swains, in Virgil's Eclogues. It is now but little known in Wales, but I hope to be able to give it more fully in my fecond Volume
