THE principal defizn of the follow

ing attempt, is to trace the conduct, and inquire into the character of Cicero. For this purpose the present letters were preferred to those which are written to Atticus: as they few the author of them in a greater variety of connections, and afford an opportunity indeed of considering him in almost every possible point of view.

This correspondence includes a period of about twenty years; commencing immediately after Cicero's consulate, and ending a few months before his death.
