Baptism is the answer of a good conscience towards God, the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which is shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Baptism was instituted by our Lord Jesus Christ, who said unto his disciples, "Goye, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things, whatsoever I have commanded you.” He annexed this promise to it, “He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved." By baptism we are made partakers of the forgiveness of and cleansing from sin, by the blood of Jesus Christ, who loved the church, and gave himself for it, that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.
