PROV. iii. S. Truft in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understand ing. E fhould truft in the Lord with all our WE I. We are not to truft in any thing but GOD. 1. Neg. Not abfolutely confider'd as GOD. 2. But relatively as our GOD, Pfal. xvi. 1, 2. Heb. viii. 10. II. What is it to truft in the Lord with all our Hearts? 1. To exert the highest degree of trust we can upon him. 2. To truft on none but him; or him more than all things. III. How fhould we truft in him? USE. Exhort. 1. Repent of this fin of trufting in other things. 1. It is bred with us as Creatures cor rupt. 2. Frequently committed. 3. It makes the Creature a GOD. 4. It is an unprofitable fin. 5. It brings a curfe on all Mercies, Jer. xvii. 5. Gen. ii. 8. Fer. ii. 37. 2. Trust 2. Truft in the Lord above all things. I, MEANS. 1. Often confider the inability of the Crea- 2. MOTIVES. 1. Ye must truft on fomething. 2. There is nothing else which you can in reafon truft in but GOD. 3. If you truft in GOD he will help you, 4. It's one end of Afflictions. 5. It giveth much glory to GOD, Rom. iv. 20. Pfal. xxxvii. 40. 6. It bringeth much quietness to the Soul, xxvii. 1, 2, 3. 7. Great Promifes are made to them that truft in him, Pfal. xxxiv. 22. Pfal.xxxi. 19. Pfal. xxxvii. 4, 5.' PROV. xix. 17. He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth to the Lord, and that which he hath given, will he pay him again. I. W Hat Hat is meant by poor? These are, 2. Poor in Grace. 3 Poor in Eftate. II. What II. What by having pity? 1. Compaffion towards them. 2. The relief of them, Jam. ii. 15, 16. 2. Chearfully, 2 Cor. ix. 7. Rom. xii. 8. 4. To the utmost of our power. III. What doth the Phrase, he lendeth to the Lord, imply? 1. That they have a propriety in what they do enjoy, GOD gives to them what they lend to him. 2. That when they give it to the poor, they do not give it quite away, but only lend it, ftill retaining a propriety in it. 3. That GOD himself looks upon himself as their debtor for it. 4. How will GOD repay it? Either, 1. In the like, Prov. xi. 25. Or, 2. In better things. 1. Grace or comfort here. Or, US E. Inf. Then the poor that receive from others, poor.
