THE second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is a truth much lost sight of among a large number of professing Christians. The doctrine, it is true, is very generally confessed, but not often embraced with a definite and waiting faith. It is to be feared that very many do not live under its real and most practical influence. Indeed there are probably few truths which have less real power in the life of many believers than this one.

This truth has lost much of its ancient position in Christian thought. Our Blessed Lord spoke of it as the one expectation of His people. The inspired writers regarded it as the great hope of the Church, and the strongest possible motive to a life of sanctification. But it is not so with many in these "latter days" of the Church, when it ought even to be more so. And the result of this is only too apparent in a low standard of personal holiness.

We think it may, as a rule, be remarked, that those who have eminently attained a marked degree of real sanctification are they who have been occupied with a lively expectation of Christ's coming again. Such an expectation cannot be a reality in the heart without having a very real influence in the life.

It is not denied that other truths are powerful motives to holiness. But they all lead up to this one, which is the climax of them all. The return in glory of the Lord Jesus,

and the presentation to Himself of His Church, to share His eternal glory, is the great end and object of redeeming love. While the resurrection of Christ is the great central truth of our religion, testifying to the reality of the Christian's hope, it is not the hope itself. This is His second coming.

We shall, in these pages, call frequent attention to this blessed truth, with a view to the promotion of holiness of life. We shall not enter much into the different opinions as to the order of events connected with "the day of the Lord." We shall rather confine ourselves to the points upon which all Christians must be agreed, namely, the suddenness of the Lord's coming, and the essential need of living in constant preparation for it.

With this object, let us glance briefly at Luke xii. 36, noticing the force of only one word-immediately. Our Lord is directing His disciples to live as "men that wait for their lord," so "that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately." His teaching undoubtedly is, that His people are to live in such daily and hourly readiness, that at any moment when He might come, they would feel no need to alter any of their surrounding circumstances. We are to be ready to "open unto Him immediately," without any need of change in what we are doing, or talking of, or even thinking about. In other words, He would have our actions, our words, and our thoughts so ordered, that, just as we are, we could welcome Him at any time.

How practical is the influence of such a thought. How it calls us to "walk in the light," and to "cleanse ourselves from all the filthiness of the flesh and spirit." How it requires a full and sustained surrender of everything even suspected to be contrary to God's will. How sad for any of His people to be found by Him performing actions, indulging habits, engaged in conversation, harbouring thoughts,
